The Power Rangers Dark Specter’s most deadly assassin just dealt a killing blow to none other than Zordon himself.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Mighty Morphin #10, available now from Boom! Studios.
The world of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers has been left shaken to its core in recent months by a series of betrayals and revelations that have not only changed the status quo of the team, but that of the entire universe as well. Throughout the opening pages of Mighty Morphin, readers have been given glimpses of the far away past to a time when the Guardians of Eltar shined as defenders of the innocent, and when the threat of Dark Specter loomed heavily over all. Finally, Lord Zedd has painted a more complete picture of what exactly happened so long ago that has had such a great impact in the present, and it all started with the universe’s deadliest assassin catching Zordon in his razor sharp grasp.
Over ten thousand years ago, the Guardians of Eltar were at odds regarding how to handle the threat of Dark Specter as well as the power of the Zeo Crystal. While each of the Guardians had different ideas concerning the Zeo Crystal’s use, Supreme Guardian Zophram ultimately decided to leave it in the hands of the clerics that guarded it until the Council of Eltar had come to their own final ruling. When the Council’s general bureaucratic ineptitude stalls that process, Zophram decides to lead the Guardians back to Bandora Palace to protect the Zeo Crystal as he sees fit. Unfortunately, one of Dark Specter’s agents has already caught up to them, and they are the most lethal foe that the heroes have ever met.
This mysterious assassin donned in bladed armor and a red hood easily dispatches the soldiers stationed outside of Bandora Palace before making their way inside and doing the same to the clerics inside. After so much time spent searching, they have finally found the Zeo Crystal. Zophram and Zordon arrive just in time to prevent the assassin from taking hold of their prize. They don’t seem concerned with the Guardians’ presence, though, even offering to let Zordon live in exchange for the Zeo Crystal and a concession. The mystery assailant quickly returns to their near invisible form when the heroes close in before unloading a vicious attack upon both Guardians, shattering Zophram’s visor and sending Zordon flying through several of the palace’s grand pillars.
With their enemies on the ropes, the assassin closes in on the Supreme Guardian for a killing blow only to deliver one to his Bronze counterpart instead when Zordon leaps back into action. Although the unhinged frenzy that this sends Zophram into is enough for him to beat the assassin nearly to death, there is nothing in his power to help Zordon recover. To make matters worse, Zophram is quick to shift the blame to Zartus once the Silver Guardian arrives on the scene.
Zartus was only setting up further security measures elsewhere as his Supreme Guardian had instructed him to, affirming that Zordon’s injuries are not something that he should be held responsible for. That still doesn’t subside Zartus’ guilt or Zophram’s rage, nor does the miraculous recovery that Zordon makes even after being wounded so grievously. As the events of Mighty Morphin #10 by Ryan Parrott, Dan Mora, Raul Angulo, Jose Enrique Fernandez, and Ed Dukeshire make it clear that the wounds dealt to the Guardians themselves are entirely irreparable.
There has already been an unimaginable amount of animosity surrounding the Zeo Crystal on the part of the Guardians of Eltar, so much so that Zartus himself has gone to drastic measures to ensure its safety. The fact that someone came so close to claiming it for themselves, let alone Dark Specter’s most effective assassin, is likely more than the team can handle with so much pressure on them already.
To top it all off, the menacing new villain that has caused them so much trouble is still alive in their prison cell. Knowing the Council’s track record with these things there likely won’t be a proper trial anytime soon, meaning the assassin will have plenty of time to plot their next deadly move.
