Xbox and Bethesda Game Studios donate $10,000 to the Montgomery County Humane Society in honor of River, Fallout 4’s Dogmeat inspiration.

Xbox has donated $10,000 to the Montgomery County Humane Society in honor of the recent passing of River, the inspiration for Fallout 4‘s Dogmeat.

The console developer and publisher noted the donation on their official Twitter account, where they replied to the original announcement of River’s passing, posted by former Fallout developer Joel Burgess. “DOGMEAT FOREVER,” reads the Twitter post. It mentions that the donated $10,000 is shared between Bethesda Studios and Xbox, and encourages fans to contribute their own donations. Since Xbox’s contribution, Burgess has responded in kind, thanking people for the “outpouring of kindness and warmth over recent days,” and invited fans to donate or volunteer. Bethesda Game Studios also replied to the tweet, writing that River was “one-of-a-kind,” and a true inspiration.

In Burgess’ original announcement of River’s passing, he posted a series of tweets explaining the dog’s impact on the game. Burgess mentioned how the team wanted a companion first, and combat ally second. They opted not to hire a “professional” dog like other studios, instead bringing River in to meet the team and spend time around the employees. This allowed the Fallout 4 team to better understand how to bring River’s personality into the game.

River’s appearance was almost directly replicated to the in-game model, and the team used recordings of her calls for Dogmeat’s audio. Burgess went on to note various behaviors of River that made their way into the game, such as River’s tendency to walk ahead and consistently look back to check in, as well as her inclination to fetch large objects.
