X-Men’s Forgotten Villain Luminous Is Much Stronger Than Scarlet Witch

[ad_1]

The new X-Men face an incredible threat when they face off with forgotten villain that’s stronger than both Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver in X-Men #3.

WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for X-Men #3, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

The new X-Men have had their work cut out for them since Cordyceps Jones set his sights on conquering the Sol system. The denizens of Jones’s Gameworld have been placing bets on who can kill every human on the planet without destroying it and have been unleashing massive attacks in an effort to achieve their goal. First, it was a Mind Reaver. Then, it was an Annihilation Wave. The X-Men thwarted both of these efforts, but their newest threat proved to be their biggest challenge yet, as their foe has proven to be more powerful than Scarlet Witch.

The X-Men faced off against the High Evolutionary and his strongest weapon, the superpowered Luminous, who handed the new team their first loss in X-Men #3 (by Gerry Duggan, Pepe Larraz, Marte Gracia, VC’s Clayton Cowles, and Tom Muller). The High Evolutionary approached the X-Men above the skies of Arakko asking them to accept his “gift” of a nihility sphere or suffer the penalty of him sterilizing every human on Earth. Rogue responded by punching him, inciting a brawl between the two sides. This led to Luminous attacking Jean Grey, only to be stopped by a force bubble courtesy of Polaris.

Luminous Defeats Polaris

Luminous immediately burst out of the bubble and punched Polaris out of the sky, stating that she thought Polaris would be more of a challenge given her lineage as Magneto’s offspring. Speeding through the battlefield, Luminous made short work of Wolverine, but Synch copied her powers and incapacitated her. He threatened the High Evolutionary, only for the villain to reveal that he has the ability to nullify Luminous’s powers with simply a thought. The High Evolutionary called his Guard to stand down in exchange for a sample of Synch’s blood. The X-Men were hesitant at first but eventually relented and Synch threw him a drop of his blood. As the villain and his entourage were leaving, Polaris screamed at Luminous that her master had the ability to turn off her powers. From her reaction, it’s clear she didn’t know about her off switch beforehand. A later page revealed that the High Evolutionary told Jean Grey the truth about who was sending all these threats to Earth.

First appearing in 2015’s Uncanny Avengers #2, by Rick Remender and Daniel Acuña, Luminous was created by the High Evolutionary using genetic material he took from Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver after they were returned to their parents. Because the High Evolutionary tinkered with her DNA, Luminous is faster than Quicksilver and wields greater reality warping power than Scarlet Witch. Luminous met Wanda and Pietro when they traveled to Counter-Earth, and initially regarded them as her siblings. The Avengers Unity Division made the trip to Counter-Earth to search for the Maximoff twins, and Rogue was kidnapped by the Master Scientist, who tortured and experimented on her. Luminous revealed to her “siblings” that Magneto was not their biological father and that they weren’t really mutants. When the High Evolutionary attacked Lowtown, where the Low Evolutionary had formed a rebel army, Luminous sided against the Maximoffs but was defeated by the Vision. The High Evolutionary, Luminous and their army were then cast off from Counter-Earth.

Given that Polaris set up a conflict between Luminous and the High Evolutionary at the end of their battle, Luminous may be on the slow road to breaking free from his will.

Regardless, now that Luminous has defeated Polaris, she’s provided an argument that she’s more powerful than not only Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, but also the true offspring of Magneto by a wide margin.
