X-Men Unlimited #6 continues the story of a mutant from Krakoa on the path of destruction, and she unfortunately is no longer alone.

One of the three laws that govern the mutant nation of Krakoa outlaws the killing of humans, and those who break this law must answer to the Quiet Council of Krakoa, whose ranks include powerful mutants like Charles Xavier, Magneto, and Apocalypse. Lin Li, Nature Girl, didn’t plan on breaking the law when she left the island to confront the man indirectly responsible for killing a sea turtle, but she did, and she is very aware of what the Quiet Council does to mutants who break Krakoan law.
The confrontation between Lin and her former mentor Wolverine in X-Men Unlimited #6 (by Gerry Duggan, Emilio Laiso, Rachele Rosenburg, and VC’s Joe Sabino) confirms that Lin is facing Krakoa’s ultimate form of punishment, but it also implies that the Quiet Council might be willing to show Lin leniency if she returns home peacefully. Unfortunately, Lin’s response reveals that she’s not going down without a fight and that she’s willing to drag other young mutants down with her.
Nature Girl took a human life in the previous issue after she witnessed the traumatic final moments of a dying sea turtle that had washed up on the shores of Krakoa. Thanks to her mutant ability, which allows her to communicate with animals, Lin learns that the turtle isn’t afraid of dying, only of dying alone. With its last breath, the turtle coughs up the plastic bag that was responsible for killing it, and the sight brings all of Lin’s pent-up rage towards humanity and its mistreatment of the environment up to the surface. Arriving in Las Vegas through one of Krakoa’s gateways, Lin storms into the convenience store that the bag came from and confronts the manager, who is more upset with Lin’s intrusion than he is with the fact that his bag killed a “dumb” turtle.
Outraged by the manager’s indifference, Nature Girl fatally stabs him with a pair of scissors. After she escapes the city, the Quiet Council dispatches Wolverine to track Lin down and bring her back to Krakoa to face justice for her crime. Upon finding her in a cave, Wolverine confirms that the Quiet Council may sentence Lin to exile, a state of suspended animation deep within Krakoa’s vast underground. Although Logan promises to do everything he can to prevent this, Lin isn’t listening to her old teacher anymore; Lin’s actions seem to have awakened something sinister within the young mutant’s heart, and she’s ready to take her one-woman war against pollution to the next level. When Logan attempts to take her by force, the bear that Lin split the cave with attacks him, giving her a chance to escape again.
Sneaking back into her home, Nature Girl packs up all her belongings and prepares to leave Krakoa forever. There she is confronted by Curse, a young mutant who first debuted in Marauders #1 (by Duggan, Matteo Lolli, Federico Blee, and Cory Petit). Unlike the other mutants, Curse isn’t bothered by the news of Lin’s crimes; in fact, she seems to have developed an admiration for Lin and asks to accompany her. Lin notes that she’s always sensed wickedness within Curse’s heart, something that was hinted at in Curse’s first appearance when she cruelly mocked Kitty Pryde after the sentient island of Krakoa “rejected” the veteran X-Man. When Lin warns Curse that following her might result in the young mutant being sent into exile alongside her, Curse implies that she’d love to be locked up beneath Krakoa, excitedly wondering what she’ll see down there as she follows Lin.
Regardless of Curse’s unnerving demeanor, Nature Girl’s decision to take a child with her proves how selfish the young mutant is acting. The X-Men accepted Lin as one of their own, and now she is repaying that kindness by betraying Krakoa. No matter how she tries to justify herself, Lin’s decision to wage war on humanity is motivated by her own need for vengeance, not her love of nature.
