Three Hellions have finally learned the truth behind their recent power boosts, and these X-Men just discovered how fleeting evolution can be.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Hellions #14, available now from Marvel.
No matter how much time has passed since X of Swords ended, the repercussions of Krakoa’s victory are still being felt. While mutantkind has shocked the world by introducing the mutants of Arakko, the Hellions are suffering from a very different sort of wake left behind from the events of the crossover. Now, Mister Sinister and his Hellions have been led into another confrontation with the same Arakki mutants who killed several of them last time. Not only that, but the Hellions who previously lost their lives at the hands of the Locus Vile have finally learned why they came back not quite themselves, and the secret to their enhanced state is as unsettling as their demises.
Before Mister Sinister killed the rest of the team to keep his secrets, Wild Child, Orphan-Maker and Nanny were killed in battle with the Locus Vile. However, they were resurrected with augmented abilities, and they exhibit a mysterious burning rage that consumes them when confronted with their foes here.
It would appear that through some means, Wild Child, Orphan-Maker and Nanny were all imbued with some amount of Arakki DNA themselves, giving them the ability to go through a sort of evolution during their resurrections. As explained in Hellions #14 by Zeb Wells, Roge Antonio, Rain Beredo, Tom Muller and VC’s Ariana Maher, the effects of these three mutants’ deaths on Amenth, and their subsequent resurrections on Krakoa, can be compared to the way evolution is studied in a lab setting through the use of E. Coli bacteria. When exposed to an antibacterial substance, the surviving bacteria will eventually evolve so as to be unaffected by that particular hostile environment.
Since these three resurrected Hellions were killed by a greater, more aggressive threat than themselves, they have come back stronger and more vicious than ever before. This isn’t all that unlike DC’s own undying monstrosity Doomsday, which is built upon the exact same idea of death and rebirth coming with an immunity to the cause of his previous demise.
If it weren’t for the fact that the Hellions are still recovering from their deaths on Arakko, this development could even be one that the mutants of Krakoa might find preferable to their current system of ceremonial death and resurrection. Of course, that would also require this second “evolution” to be more permanent than Arakko’s own Tarn the Uncaring proves it to be, as he easily strips whatever it was within Wild Child that had imbued him with his enhanced abilities.
The fact that Tarn has such an immense level of control over any being imbued with his genetic handiwork is a stark reminder of just how powerful this denizen of Arakko truly is. This moment of clarity is an important one that not only explains what has been happening to some of the Hellions’ most important members but the nature of Arakko as well. Considering the hole that Sinister continues to dig for himself and his team, every bit of information or edge that they can get over their current rivals is more valuable than anything else.
