X-Men Unlimited Infinity Comic #6 puts Wolverine in a difficult position, recreating one of Logan’s most iconic and brutal fights in the process.
Warning: The following contains spoilers for X-Men Unlimited Infinity Comic #6, available now on Marvel Unlimited.
Wolverine has been involved in some iconic fights over the years. Logan is the best there is at what he does, and he’s proven it time and again on the battlefield. X-Men Unlimited Infinity Comic #6, by Gerry Duggan, Emilio Laiso, Rachelle Rosenberg and VC’s Joe Sabino, pays tribute to a classic and brutal Wolverine fight.
By this point in the story, Wolverine has been sent to track down Nature Girl, who is on a violent rampage against humanity. Logan tracks down his old student and her new dog, asking her to come back to Krakoa with him. Of course, Nature Girl isn’t going willingly, sending a large bear to attack Wolverine. The fight that follows is reminiscent of the opening pages of 1982’s iconic Wolverine #1, by Chris Claremont, Frank Miller, Josef Rubinstein, Glynis Wein and Tom Orzechowski.
This classic comic opened with Wolverine tracking down a grizzly bear that had been on a killing spree in the Canadian Rockies. Logan fought and killed the bear with considerable ease. The trick, however, was that the bear had been wounded by a poison-coated arrow from a particularly careless hunter. This iconic fight was even referenced in the 2013 film The Wolverine, cementing its place as one of Logan’s most memorable battles.
There are some clear similarities between Wolverine’s original battle and his more recent encounter with a grizzly bear. The most obvious connection is Logan battling a massive bear, one which he didn’t really want to hurt. Additionally, in both fights, the bear is never the real enemy. In both cases, Wolverine ends up hunting down the person who set the bear on the rampage, whether it was a careless hunter or a misguided young mutant. Both fights also use similar caption boxes to walk through Logan’s battle tactics and his feelings on the current situation.
It’s very clear, from the premise and from the presentation of Wolverine’s internal monologue, that this recent fight is an homage to Wolverine’s classic battle from decades ago. Still, there are some big differences between these two fights as well. In the original confrontation, Logan was able to defeat the bear with considerable ease, due to the poison in its system. The current battle, however, is much tougher on Wolverine, who faces a bear at full strength. The bear tosses Logan around, bites into his arm, and even tears out a large portion of his guts. The battle doesn’t end until the bear snaps out of Nature Girl’s trance and walks away, with Wolverine passing out unconscious.
Based on the circumstances, the first battle was more of a mission of mercy, not just to end the bear’s killing spree, but to put it out of its misery. The second fight, however, was a fight for Wolverine’s life, facing a bear at full strength. Either way, Logan didn’t want to hurt the bear any more than he had to. Yet, in order to get the job done, Wolverine had to use the skills he had available.
