In the final issue of X-Factor, one of the teammates demonstrated a new power, showing why no mutant should be underestimated.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for X-Factor #10 by Leah Williams, David Baldeon, David Messina, Lucas Weneck, Israel Silva & VC’s Joe Caramagna, on sale now.
Mutantkind is incredibly vast and filled with a wide variety of powersets. Some of these mutants are underestimated due to their abilities, which may seem useless in combat situations.
Recently, Eye-Boy demonstrated a powerful new ability, which shows how much he can be underestimated.
Eye-Boy shows off his impressive new power in the recent X-Factor #10, while helping Prodigy confront his murderer, Buck Thatcher. Eye-Boy was mainly there to show Prodigy a video of himself, explaining the circumstances of his murder. Afterward, Eye-Boy innocently asked if Prodigy wanted to see something cool.
Eye-Boy then made a strange series of hand gestures, before unleashing a beam of energy that blasted Thatcher. It’s unclear exactly how Eye-Boy managed to pull this off. When Prodigy asked, Eye-Boy only said that he’d been “experimenting” with his powers.
Regardless, this move is an incredible new addition to the other aspects of Eye-Boy’s powers. One of Eye-Boy’s primary abilities is his enhanced vision, which can be used as microscopic vision, x-ray vision, thermal vision and many other types of enhanced vision. In addition, Eye-Boy has so many eyes to choose from, allowing him to see from a lot of different angles during his investigations with X-Factor.
As a whole, Eye-Boy has acted as a sort CSI for X-Factor with his enhanced vision. On top of this, Eye-Boy can use his eyes to read people. Examining micro-expressions, body language and other non-verbal cues, Eye-Boy is excellent at reading people psychologically. As a mutant investigator, Eye-Boy definitely has his uses. Yet, until now, Eye-Boy has never used his powers in an offensive capacity.
By experimenting with his abilities and discovering the energy blasts in his power, Eye-Boy has truly rounded out his skill set as a member of X-Factor. Eye-Boy can now act as a CSI, a psychological evaluator and a field combatant.
This shift says a lot about the ever-evolving and changing nature of mutant powers in general. Several mutants have power that they didn’t even know they possessed. For many, it takes time to discover their full potential. Eye-Boy has only begun to break through his previous ideas around his abilities.
In a sense, Eye-Boy’s new power bears a striking resemblance to the iconic Kamehameha move in the Dragon Ball series. This finishing move is widely associated with Goku, the main protagonist of the series. Eye-Boy’s energy blast is very similar to this move, in that he makes similar hand gestures to Goku before unleashing his energy blast.
Eye-Boy’s cupped hands, followed by thrusting forward a powerful beam of energy, evoke the Kamehameha move from Dragon Ball. They’re clearly not the same move, but it’s interesting to see the visual similarities nonetheless. Additionally, the Kamehameha move has several variations. This opens up several possibilities for Eye-Boy, who could continue to experiment with his energy blasts.
Just like the Kamehameha move, Eye-Boy’s blasts could have a wide range of variations, which he is only just beginning to discover. This is all a big shift from Eye-Boy’s earlier appearances, where his powers had fewer uses. Now, Eye-Boy’s evolving power-set has given him a fairly big role on a team like X-Factor.
Another example arrives later in the issue when Eye-Boy reveals that he acts like a buffoon so that other people let their guards down and he can properly read them. Prodigy even comments on how sharp Eye-Boy is. Although he seems goofier as a character, Eye-Boy has demonstrated that he’s much more competent than he appears. As he continues to explore his mutant powers, Eye-Boy also continues to show how far he’s come as a character.
