Leaks for the latest WWE 2K game reveal that the box art will feature lucha libre wrestler Rey Mysterio, plus deluxe content featuring Undertaker.
After skipping a year for the first time since its inception, information is starting to filter through for the latest WWE 2K game.
Reputable leaker Nils Ahrensmeier shared images of the box art for WWE 2K22 featuring Rey Mysterio, who will appear on the cover of both the Standard and Deluxe Editions. Ahrensmeier also revealed that the Deluxe version of the game will include content for the infamous Undertaker and a Season Pass.
The Undertaker content, known as the Undertaker Immortal Pack, will be available as a pre-order bonus for the game and features three alternative personas for the wrestler: Phantom Mask, the Lord of Darkness and Boneyard Match. The Immortal Pack will also include MyFACTION EVO cards for The Undertaker, as well as various MyFACTION perks and bonuses. Though The Undertaker retired from in-ring action at Survivor Series in 2020, he’s still signed to WWE.
Players will have the opportunity to redeem a three-day early access pass on March 8, allowing fans to play the game before it becomes more widely available. Although an official launch date has not been confirmed so far, a short trailer for WWE 2K22 previously teased a March 2022 release window.
The WWE 2K series began its run as WWF Smackdown! in 2000, with the game developed by Yuke’s and released for PlayStation by THQ. It wasn’t until the fourth entry in the series that the games would switch from WWF to WWE before adopting the 2K banner in 2014 when 2K Sports came on board as a publisher. Yuke’s was initially retained as a developer before being replaced by Visual Concepts in 2019.
WWE and 2K Sports opted not to produce a follow-up to WWE 2k20 due to poor sales and negative reception concerning the game’s graphics, gameplay and glitches. Developmental issues related to the COVID-19 were also factored into the decision to cancel WWE 2K21. Even though a mainline game didn’t launch in 2020, the arcade-style spinoff, WWE 2K Battlegrounds, was released by developer Saber Interactive. Battlegrounds is notable for diverging from the more realistic 2K entries, but critics praised the game’s art style. The game received mixed reviews in general, though, with elements such as microtransactions earning the brunt of any criticism.
WWE 2K22 will be available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
