Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot offers an update on the status of the third film in the DCEU franchise, including when filming might start.
Gal Gadot shared an update on when filming might get underway on Wonder Woman 3.
When asked by InStyle about the status of the third film in the DCEU franchise, Gadot said, “We’re developing the script right now. We’ll probably start in a year and a half or so.” Warner Bros. fast-tracked a third Wonder Woman movie in December 2020 immediately following the release of Wonder Woman 1984.
Gadot’s latest comments on Wonder Woman 3 mark the first time she’s provided a timeframe on the highly-anticipated threequel. When asked in November 2021 about a possible release date for the film, Gadot said, “I can’t tell you yet.” She did, however, confirm the script for Wonder Woman 3 was being developed. When asked if she could divulge any plot details, Gadot joked, “No, because then people will come off the roof and take me away.”
Franchise director Patty Jenkins is returning behind the camera for Wonder Woman 3 after previously stating she’d only direct the third film if “there was still a theatrical model possible.” Unlike Wonder Woman 1984, which was available to stream on HBO Max the same day it hit theaters, the third film in the franchise is expected to debut exclusively on the big screen.
Wonder Woman 3 will also mark the return of original Wonder Woman star Lynda Carter, who made a brief cameo during the end credits of the second installment. Gadot recently praised her predecessor for mentoring her “from the very first moment” she was cast as Diana Prince, adding that it “means the world” to have Carter returning for the threequel.
Prior to the official announcement of Wonder Woman 3, Gadot seemed unsure if the project would get off the ground. “We have no idea. You never know,” she said while promoting Wonder Woman 1984 when asked about a third film. “I would love to do another one if the story is great and with Patty [Jenkins] of course. But I don’t know. We’ll have to wait and see.”
Jenkins was similarly uncertain about the prospect of Wonder Woman 3 during the press tour for Wonder Woman 1984, at one point saying she was “not sure” she’d make the movie. “I don’t think I’m doing it next and so I have to sort of wait and see where we are in the world, you know?” she said at the time.
Wonder Woman 3 has yet to receive a release date, but if filming begins in mid-2023 as Gadot suggested, the threequel likely won’t hit theaters until 2024 at the earliest.
