WARNING: The following contains spoilers from Batman: Urban Legends #6, on sale now.

Ever since she snapped his neck so many years ago, Wonder Woman has remained a fierce opponent for the criminal mastermind Maxwell Lord. Ever since he revealed his time with the Justice League as a ruse, Lord has been an increasingly unscrupulous villain in the DC Universe. Unfortunately for him, he may soon have a rival beyond the Amazing Amazon.

In the latest issue of Batman: Urban Legends, the WildC.A.T. Zealot tries to assassinate Lord, all the while mentioning a potential rivalry with Jacob Marlowe, another big player in the former WildStorm Universe.

Zealot Marlowe Gotham

Created by Jim Lee and Brandon Choi, Jacob Marlowe debuted in WildC.A.T.s #1, a founding book at Image Comics and the beginning of the Wildstorm Universe. He was in fact the alien Kherubim Lord Emp, who had crashed landed on Earth centuries ago after a violent battle with the Daemonites. He fought the remaining Daemonites throughout the centuries until Helspont struck him with amnesia. It was only when Void helped him to recall his memory that he would attain his well-known wealth.

Wishing to deal with the growing threat of Daemonites in the modern-day, the rejuvenated Emp took the name of Jacob Marlowe and become a multi-billionaire. He formed the WildC.A.T.s to take on Helspont’s forces, with one of the team members being Zealot. Zealot, a fellow Kherubim, had also fought alongside Emp on Team One, and was quite loyal to his quest to defeat the Daemonites. This loyalty was not only present in the recent reboot The Wild Storm, but it’s also in the rebooted versions of the character in the DC Universe.

Maxwell Lord vs. Jacob Marlowe

In Batman: Urban Legends #6, Maxwell Lord is primed for assassination by none other than Lady Zannah of the Coda, a.k.a. the WildC.A.T. Zealot. To add insult to intended injury, Zealot first attempts to kill Lord while dressed as Wonder Woman, who had quite the history with. This sees her casually slicing and dicing against his security, mercilessly killing mortal men in a manner which Wonder Woman never would.

According to Zealot, her “employer” has grown weary of Maxwell Lord’s business dealings behind the scenes of the world, finding them troublesome and meddlesome with his own plans. This employer is of course Emp, a fact which Maxwell Lord himself seems to be aware of. In fact, he retorts that Zealot’s boss is going to have some stiff competition when it comes to possibly taking over the world. Emp’s aims have usually involved taking down the Daemonites, but he’s never been above rather amoral or shadowy means to do so. This likely has meant the pulling of strings and disappearing of people who got in his or the WildC.A.T.s’ way.

How or when exactly this all factored into Emp possibly wanting to control the world or manipulate it into his image is unknown, but a foe like Maxwell Lord would definitely be a problem for anyone with goal’s opposing his. It’s also still unknown how Lord knows Marlowe, but more of their connection, as well as that of Zealot and Wonder Woman, is sure to be revealed in future issues.
