Wonder Woman came up against a new evil shining knight and her lasso wasn’t what shone through in this fight – it was her words.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Wonder Woman #783, on sale now from DC Comics.
Wonder Woman can’t catch a break. As soon as she came back from the Sphere of the Gods, she was immediately brought back into action by friends and enemies alike. And what little peace she enjoyed was interrupted by attacks from not one villain but two. Now, her encounter with a twisted version of a Justice Society hero revealed when the Princess of Themyscira has truly had enough, she has an underrated, surprising talent.
Dr. Cziko sent his very own version of the Shining Knight to take down his nemesis in Wonder Woman #783 (by Michael W. Conrad, Becky Cloonan, Marcio Takara, Tamra Bonvillain, and Pat Brosseau). At first, Diana tried to diffuse the situation. However, when her signature attempts to resolve things peacefully failed, she went on the offensive in perhaps the most brutal way possible.
Perhaps those words are what inspired her to deploy such tactics in this fight. She’s usually much more reserved and respectful in battle but, this time, she went all out. When it was revealed that this Shining Knight had the power of flight, she feigned shock, just before she bopped him on the head with her tiara. Her foe recognized her tactics straight away and was angered by her “toying” with him. Rather than ease off, she went harder, insulting his costume and saying that she would forget his face as soon as she saw it in the same breath. As she was on the defensive, each insult acted as a blow of its own, harming her opponent when her fists couldn’t.
It’s rather unusual to see Diana like this. She’s usually the most serious of her fellow heroes. Seeing her take the opportunity to show off with a cheeky tiara throw seems almost out of character. However, the important thing to remember is that Diana has been trained by the Amazons in virtually every form of combat. Despite removing themselves from Man’s World for centuries, they know how to use guns, a modern weapon far beyond their time. It’s hardly a surprise then to learn they’re also proficient in trash talk. As heroes like Nightwing prove, a well-placed one-liner can be absolutely devastating in a fight when used in an opportune moment. Therefore, the warrior princess knows how to utilize this great weapon too.
It is clear that Diana is exploiting an obvious weakness in her enemy. Words are just another weapon in her arsenal. They prove as effective as a sword, perhaps even more so, as they considerably weaken her opponent. She’s still an honorable warrior, definitely more honorable than this new Shining Knight or Cizko, and as such, she knows that no matter how devastating her insults are, they will never drag her down to the levels of her enemies.
