In the Guardians of the Galaxy’s future, Doctor Doom turned Wolverine’s adamantium skeleton into his terrifying, unbreakable final form.
The possible future timelines of the Marvel Universe are just as varied as an infinite multiverse. The home of the original Guardians of the Galaxy, a future where humanity was the target of a brutal alien invasion, experienced one of Marvel’s strangest futures on Earth-691. A good majority of the world’s heroes were lost in a war with the Martian Masters. During the conflict, Doctor Doom, ever the pragmatist, fought alongside the likes of Captain America and the Silver Surfer to stop the Martian invasion. Unlike the Avengers, Doom survived the battle, but his activities over the intervening millennia are largely unknown.
But as revealed in Jim Valentino’s Guardians of the Galaxy #24 in 1992, Doctor Doom transplanted his brain into the adamantium skeleton of Wolverine. This enabled him to extend his life and paved the way for a bizarre plot that would’ve seen him conquer the Earth through the use of television.
This grand scheme involved destabilizing the population through a television broadcast called Realitee-Vee, a highly addictive entertainment system that when dispatched globally caused massed anarchy as the populace fell to Doom’s control. However, this world’s new Guardians of the Galaxy managed to destroy part of Doom’s network, ruining his plans.
Of course, Doom didn’t plan for all those centuries just to give the game away at the first sign of defeat. He had managed to mask his involvement by pinning the crime onto the Badoon, an alien race of lizard creatures that he had used as lackeys in this endeavor. Having used his scapegoats, Doom began plotting to resurrect his Realitee-Vee scheme but needed some extra assistance this time.
In Michael Gallager and Kevin West’s Guardians of the Galaxy #32, this appeared in the form of Rancor, a descendant of Wolverine who claimed to be searching for her ancestor. Concealing the truth of his new body in a cloak, Doom used his claws to forge an alliance with Rancor. With the alliance set, the two reestablish Doom’s Realitee-Vee network, but Rancor had a surprise in store for Doom. Ambushing him, Rancor revealed she had intended to kill the murderer of Wolverine, unveiling Doom’s true form on live television.
Doom, having anticipated her betrayal, began to duke it out with her for supremacy. But while their fight was being broadcast to the entire world, the Guardians of the Galaxy once again stopped Doom’s plot. Too occupied with his fight with Rancor, Doom was unable to do anything to stop them. In the ensuing conflict, he defeated Rancor but sustained heavy injuries, perhaps the most damage he’d sustained over the last few centuries. With his plans foiled and the truth of his continued existence revealed, Doom fled from the Earth, cutting his losses in a bid for survival.
While Doom has always been endlessly resourceful, the act of transferring his mind into Wolverine’s skeleton alone stands as one of his more successful schemes. While he was certainly stopped, he was never definitively defeated, which means that this Terminator-esque version of Doctor Doom could still be plotting in one distant corner of the multiverse.
