From the Law of Surprise to “Toss A Coin To Your Witcher,” all of the major moments of The Witcher’s Season 1 are recapped in one cheeky video.
For viewers who might be rusty on their Witcher lore, Netflix has released a promo that recaps all of the important events from Season 1 — with a wry narration reminiscent of Jaskier the bard, no less.
“Destiny has brought you here!” the Netflix Geeked Twitter account posted alongside the video, which quickly summarizes all of The Witcher‘s first eight episodes, from Geralt’s battle with Renfri to his meetings with love interest Yennefer and his adopted child, Ciri.
if you’re new to the world of The Witcher… DESTINY HAS BROUGHT YOU HERE! Learn (or refresh yourself on) everything you need to know about Geralt of Rivia, Yennefer of Vengerberg, Princess Cirilla of Cintra, and the humble bard Jaskier. pic.twitter.com/30Nrf9ChIw

Unlike Season 1 of the show, which followed a non-linear method of storytelling that jumped across time periods — telling the intertwined tales of Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri until the three protagonists actually crossed paths in person — the recap presents each character’s respective tale in a more linear fashion. While The Witcher‘s first batch of episodes received praise, some viewers found the timeline difficult to follow, prompting Netflix to release a chart detailing the trajectories of Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri. Season 2 of the show has promised a more traditional narrative.
Another important element recapped in the video is the Law of Surprise, a custom in the world of The Witcher where one can repay another by offering a reward that is unknown to both parties.
“Destiny then determines that payment, which is something the other person already possesses, but doesn’t know about,” the video’s narration states, explaining that Geralt’s destiny was forever linked with Ciri when he saved both of her parents and claimed the Law of Surprise as payment — unaware of the fact that Ciri’s mother, Pavetta, was pregnant at the time. “Make sense?”
Last but certainly not least, the recap humorously covers the famous “Toss A Coin To Your Witcher” tune, which was first sung by Jaskier in “Four Marks.” “A bard called Jaskier joins Geralt on his quest, and is like, ‘You have got an image problem. I could change the public’s tune about you.’ Geralt gets his ass kicked by a goat man, and they are captured by elves. King of the elves, Filavandrel, is like, ‘My elders worked with humans. They were slaughtered.’ He goes to cut Geralt’s throat, who’s like, whatever mate, just ‘Don’t call me human.’ So the elves let them go, after which this song that never lets you sleep was born.”
The Witcher Season 2 begins streaming on Netflix on Dec. 17. The show’s first season as well as an anime spinoff, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, are both available to stream now.
