A longtime X-Men leader’s true potential has been hinted at from across the multiverse, and she could be a real game-changer for Krakoa.
Debuting in the “Dark Phoenix Saga” by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, Dazzler began life as a trendy disco-themed hero. But while that Era of pop culture ended, the character endured as a minor reoccurring member of the X-Men. She’s hopped dimensions and teams over the years and has played more than a couple of roles within the X-Men corner of the Marvel Universe.
But when looking at variants of the character from across the Marvel multiverse, it’s clear that she hasn’t reached her true potential. In fact, some of Dazzler’s most notable variants prove she could quietly be one of Krakoa’s most potentially powerful mutants.
At first glance, Dazzler doesn’t have the most extraordinary mutant ability. Capable of converting sound waves into blasts of light, Alison Blaire was initially content to utilize her powers for entertainment purposes as part of her musical act. Eventually joining the X-Men, the hero has primarily remained an entertainment star above any other within the X-Men as a team. However, she’s also proven to be incredibly capable when the situation calls for it. She became the team leader of the reality-hopping team that was featured in X-Treme X-Men, earning the respect of her newfound friends on the battlefield. After the events of Secret Wars, Dazzler even joined A-Force — becoming one of the major X-Men to make the transition to become an Avenger.
Even besides her heroic work, she also remains one of the most socially acceptable mutant figures, with her music being confirmed to still be successful in the modern-day thanks to titles like Children of the Atom. But across the multiverse, variants of Dazzler have reinforced the full potential of the mutant hero. In one world — featured in What If…? #33 by Dan Fingeroth and Mike Vosburg — she found herself recruited as the new Herald of Galactus. Given a cosmic power boost, she was capable of holding her own against Terrax and even proved so positive that Cactus fell in love with her. In the future glimpsed in the Battle of the Atom reality, she eventually transitioned from entertainment to politics and even was elected to the office of President of the United States (before being assassinated during her inauguration).
During Secret Wars (and briefly bleeding into the core-Marvel Universe in A-Force #5 by Kelly Thompson and Ben Caldwell), a version of Dazzler was introduced who’d proven worthy enough to weird Mjolnir, serving as a member of the Thor Corps. One variant of her even put aside the tensions between Inhumans and Mutants in What If…? Infinity: Inhuman by Joshua Williamson and Riley Rossmo — working together with Black Bolt, Dazzler became the ultimate secret weapon against Thanos. When the Mad Titan attacked them, Black Bolt channeled his planet-shaking voice and funneled it directly into Dazzler. The ensuing light blast from the mutant was powerful enough filly eradicate the Mad Titan, killing him more effectively than perhaps anyone else had in the entire Marvel multiverse.
Dazzler has always been a fan-favorite character among audiences, appearing across multiple decades and adapting her style as she needs to with the changing times. But if she hunkered down and focused on her real potential instead of just focusing on her music career — which has admittedly made her world-famous — it’s possible Dazzler could become one of Krakoa’s most powerful weapons. Much like Forge, while she may not strictly be an Omega-Level Mutant, she has the power to at least rival some of them.
