The upcoming death of the Justice League is the ideal time for the Super Sons to truly step into the spotlight as the future of DC.
The upcoming Justice League #75 will see the titular team go up against an impossible threat, and actually fall in the line of duty. It’s been revealed that only one of the ten heroes who embark on that adventure will actually survive the battle and make it back to Earth. This will likely leave a massive power vacuum in the DC Universe, setting the stage for any number of heroes. But with Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Zatanna, Hawkgirl, Green Arrow, and Black Canary apparently all on the chopping block, there are some big shoes to fill.
There are already some major questions about who could step up and take up the mantles of the lost heroes. But two of the most promising figures who could take the important roles left behind by their mentors (and fathers) in a prospective new Justice League are Jon Kent and Damian Wayne.
The sons of Superman and Batman respectively, Jon and Damian both have a wealth of experience despite their young ages. Jon in particular has become a crucial figure in the modern DC Universe. When his father embarked to War-World to try and liberate the peoples trapped on that planet-sized coliseum, Jon assumed the responsibilities of Superman on Earth. Meanwhile, while Damian has grown increasingly distant with his father lately, he’s also established himself as a leader and hero on Lazarus Island. He’s made peace with the death of Alfred Pennyworth, and is well-positioned to finally grow into his own (ironically while embracing his role as Robin). He’s even got Justice League experience, having briefly served on the team during the “No Justice” story-arc.
Both heroes also have a good deal of experience directly working together as the Super-Sons. Despite the divergent paths they’ve been on recently, they reaffirmed that connection in Superman and Robin Special #1 by Peter J. Tomasi and Viktor Bogdanovic. Despite having gone through serious changes, the two still regard each other as best friends. If there needs to be a new generation of heroes, then Damian and Jon could easily fill in as the newest incarnation of the World’s Finest. It’d be a fitting evolution for both heroes, and something Jon has already been advancing towards in Superman: Son of Kal-El. Given their experience working with other heroes, they could easily become lynchpins in a new wave of heroes who rise up to take up the fight left by the deceased Justice League.
Both heroes also have connections to other groups of heroes, which could entice more partnerships and alliances among the remaining heroes. Damian’s ties to the Bat-Family and the Teen Titans could lead to some serious back-up for the pair. Meanwhile, Jon has already shown off his capabilities to people like Wally West and Jackson Hyde (aka Flash and the new Aquaman), setting up a potential friendship between Jon and the other heroes if they all did unite. This could even be seen as a way for the heroes of the modern DC Universe to start inching towards the kind of Justice League that appeared in Future State, with Jon at the center. But Damian’s inclusion in that heroic path could keep him away from a dangerous path of embracing his mother’s world in his father’s absence.
The pair could also provide a perfect way to further bounce other new heroes against an established duo. Their youth would likely allow Jon and Damian to be ideal contrasts to other legacy figures like Jackson Hyde, Yara Flor, Jo Mullein, and Naomi. But their experience means they could hold their own against any other older heroes who join up with the League in the stead of their fallen comrades. This could be the perfect chance for DC to cement the futures of the Superman and Batman legacies by highlighting even without Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne, their heirs are ready and able to protect the world they leave behind.
