Recently, it’s been argued that Captain America is to blame for Thanos’ snap, but further inspection reveals that it was the fault of many.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, many of its heroes have witnessed a failure in some way, but it wasn’t until Thanos snapped his fingers in Avengers: Infinity War that each hero witnessed a seemingly irreversible defeat. Recently, The Marvels director Nia DaCosta stated that the snap was Steve Rogers’ fault; however, it appears the failure felt in Infinity War may have been more of a team effort.
DaCosta believes that Steve was at fault because his urge to protect Vision’s life caused a cascade effect that led to eradicating half of all life. Rogers’ ideals have always put him in the position where saving one life is as important as saving the world. While it’s a noble code, it may have had no place in the battle against Thanos. However, this isn’t the first time that blame has been placed on one person when it came to why Thanos snapped his fingers. For the longest time, the most notorious target of blame in this unique argument has been Peter Quill.
During the battle on Titan, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange and Iron Man pinned down Thanos long enough to almost remove his gauntlet. In this time, Star-Lord mocked Thanos and inquired what happened to Gamora. At this moment, it was revealed that he sacrificed her to obtain the Soul Stone. Rather than let the team finish the job, Peter instead attacked Thanos, giving him enough time to break free and incapacitate the team.
It is also possible that Gamora would have to share some blame as well. Since Gamora was the only one who knew where the Soul Stone was, the best thing she could’ve done was distance herself from her father. While this could’ve meant leaving the Guardians, it could’ve bought them enough time to find a better way to stop Thanos. However, he would’ve still learned she knew the location after capturing Nebula. There’s also the dilemma of the futility surrounding the Mind Stone’s destruction.
DaCosta stated that if they had destroyed Vision’s Infinity Stone, Thanos wouldn’t be able to finish the gauntlet. If the film’s chain of events remained the same leading up to the Battle for Wakanda, Thanos would’ve obtained the Time Stone. Therefore, even if Vision’s stone was destroyed, Thanos could reverse time and get the stone, just as he did in the film. Granted, it’s possible he may not be able to if it happened too far in the past, but with few rules being established with the Time Stone, it’s possible timeframe wouldn’t matter.
It’s clear Avengers: Infinity War is a story in which each choice has massive consequences. As a result, making the right decision is imperative. To make things even more streamlined, Doctor Strange confirmed that every choice made would lead to an overall victory. Theoretically, had Steve decided to sacrifice the Vision, this could instead lead to a full instead of partial defeat. In a situation where the only way to win requires multiple decisions that end negatively, it’s difficult to blame one person.
