Why Shang-Chi’s Razor Fist Was Redesigned to Get Rid of His Comics ‘Mankini’ Look

Marvel’s Director of Visual Development Andy Park explains why one key villain was redesigned for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Marvel’s Director of Visual Development Andy Park has addressed why Razor Fist didn’t wear a comics-accurate costume in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

In an interview with Screen Rant, Park was asked about comics-accurate costumes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He explained that Marvel Studios is always trying to get more comics-accurate looks, but things change depending on the overall vision for a particular project’s story. After addressing WandaVision using Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch’s classic costume, Park turned to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Razor Fist.

“So to answer your question about Shang-Chi, Razor Fist… Well, Razor Fist, I think we knew from the get-go that they were going to want to go more tactical,” Park explained. “The story wouldn’t make sense and I think some of the classic comic looks, he looks like he’s got this mankini look or something, or a wrestler look. It doesn’t make sense. That one, we didn’t go there.”

Created by Doug Moench and Paul Gulacy, William Young — the first person to call themselves Razor Fist — debuted in 1975’s Master of Kung Fu #29. The original Razor Fist was an assassin for Carlton Velcro, one of Shang-Chi’s classic villains. Razor Fist gets his name from the fact Velcro had his hands replaced with steel blades. Later, following William Young’s death, William Scott and Douglas Scott took up the mantle.

The version of Razor Fist in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, who is played by Florian Munteanu, is never explicitly identified as any of those three characters. A deleted scene for the film refers to him as Mattias and that he’s Shang-Chi’s adopted brother. Another deleted scene from later in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings also reveals Razor Fist died in battle helping Katy (Awkwafina) get her bow. However, deleted scenes are generally not considered canon.

Released in September, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. The title sees Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) working to stop his estranged father, Wenwu (Tony Leung), from inadvertently releasing the Dweller-in-Darknesss into the world. The movie proved a hit at the box office, earning more than $430 million worldwide despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings also received strong reviews from critics, and the movie currently sits at a 92 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is available on home media and digital now.
