Writer Matthew Rosenberg says Red Hood’s complicated relationship with death makes him the perfect leader for the undead Suicide Squad, Task Force Z.
Red Hood is uniquely equipped to deal with the undead members of Task Force Z.
Speaking in the DC Nation‘s “Spotlight on Task Force Z,” writer Matthew Rosenberg was asked about how Jason Todd’s unique relationship with death would impact his role in the series. Rosenberg explained that the Red Hood’s past is exactly what makes him the perfect leader, saying, “Jason’s history is something that informs everything he does. He’s probably the ideal candidate to lead this team, as he knows how dark and painful resurrection can be.” However, Rosenberg was quick to point out that Jason’s struggles won’t make him consider taking it easy on the undead Suicide Squad. “He’s also not someone who has a lot of compassion for the wicked…or himself. Leading this team will be a struggle for him.”
Task Force Z is an upcoming DC Comics series by Rosenberg, artist Eddy Barrows and inker Eber Ferreira. It follows the Red Hood as he leads a squad of resurrected villains on a mission to defend Gotham. The conspiracy surrounding the team lies at the heart of the title, as the undead fiends fight for their right to live once more. The book’s eclectic cast of villains includes Bane, Man-Bat, the Arkham Knight and Mr. Bloom.
In addition to featuring a number of characters that fell during the Arkham Asylum attack known as “A-Day,” Task Force Z spins out of the events of current Suicide Squad title. In that series, Amanda Waller sent Task Force X into Hell to retrieve a substance known as Lazarus Resin. Like the Lazarus Pit that it draws its name from, Lazarus Resin has the ability to restore life for short periods of time, though it does leave some aesthetic abnormalities. The existence of Lazarus Resin effectively gives Waller control over life and death.
Of course, the Red Hood is no stranger to death himself. As Robin, Jason Todd was famously killed when DC fans voted for him to die in Batman #427. Decades later, Jason came back to life as the Red Hood, distancing himself from Batman with a violent approach to crime-fighting. Over the years, Batman and the Red hood have mended their shattered relationship, though Jason’s allegiance with Waller is sure to ruffle some feathers.
In addition to Task Force Z, Rosenberg is the author behind DC vs. Vampires, a twelve-issue miniseries drawn by artist Otto Schmidt. In it, Rosenberg tackles an entirely different type of undead, as a legion of vampires attacks familiar DC heroes. Unlike Task Force Z, the story is set outside of regular continuity, meaning that everybody and anybody could be turned into a tasty meal for a hungry vampire.
