Cobra Kai star Martin Kove admits he was initially skeptical about the Karate Kid sequel series bringing Terry Silver back into the fold.
WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Cobra Kai Season 4, streaming now on Netflix.
Cobra Kai star Martin Kove, who reprises his role as key antagonist John Kreese from the Karate Kid films, says he was initially skeptical about the Netflix series bringing The Karate Kid Part III villain Terry Silver back into the fold.
Kove’s John Kreese, sensei of the Cobra Kai dojo and one-time teacher of Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) was the main antagonist of 1985’s The Karate Kid. He also served as a minor antagonist in 1986’s The Karate Kid Part II and a secondary antagonist in 1989’s Part III. The main villain of Karate Kid III, meanwhile, was Thomas Ian Griffith’s Terry Silver, a corrupt businessman and the original founder of Cobra Kai.
Kreese was largely absent throughout the first season of the sequel series Cobra Kai, which was a YouTube Premium original for its first two seasons before jumping to Netflix. However, Johnny’s sensei ultimately returned in the Season 1 finale before serving as the main antagonist of Seasons 2 and 3. Cobra Kai Season 3 shined new light on Kreese and Silver’s time serving in Vietnam, with Griffith finally reprising his role as Silver in the newly-released Season 4.
“You’re bringing another heavy into the show, and I had mixed feelings about that, to be perfectly honest,” Kove told Entertainment Weekly regarding Silver’s return. “I don’t like another guy coming in stealing some of the thunder from [my] darkness. But it seems that it would shed a lot more light on my character if someone else was causing all the problems. I couldn’t be barking, ‘Let’s get Eagle Fang! Let’s defeat Miyagi-Do!’ in front of my dojo anymore. I was doing that Season 1, Season 2, Season 3. We needed some fresh elements in the show.”
Cobra Kai Season 4 sees lifelong rivals Johnny, sensei of Eagle Fang Karate, and Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio), sensei of Miyagi-Do Karate, join forces in order to take the fight to Kreese, who had previously seized control of the reformed Cobra Kai from Johnny. In order to even the odds, Kreese convinces Silver to return to the dojo. However, this comes back to bite Kreese, with Silver forcing his former friend out and taking full control of Cobra Kai for himself.
According to Cobra Kai co-creator Hayden Schlossberg, the upcoming fifth season will shed some light on what things might have looked like had Terry Silver, not Daniel LaRusso, reigned victorious at the end of The Karate Kid Part III.
Cobra Kai Season 4 is streaming on Netflix now.
