Why Kitty Pryde Joined the Guardians of the Galaxy and Why She Quit

[ad_1]

The X-Men’s Shadowcat enjoyed a brief stint with the Guardians of the Galaxy — and pursued a romance with one notable team member you’d least expect.

Many of the X-Men have found themselves working with other teams over the years, even beyond their loyalty to the mutant group. Plenty of them have become Avengers, and a few have spent time working as reserve members of the Fantastic Four. But so far, there’s only been one major X-Man who found themselves taking to the cosmos with the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Kate Pryde left the X-Men and became a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, fighting against cosmic threats and navigating a romance with Star-Lord before ending everything with one final throwdown battle against Thanos.

Shadowcat Guardians of the Galaxy 1

“The Trial of Jean Grey” was a crossover between the All-New X-Men and Guardians of the Galaxy, focusing on the former being dragged deep into space. After the Shi’Ar Imperial Guard decides to hold the time-displaced Jean Grey accountable for the actions of her older self, the two heroic teams must rush into action to save the young woman. Along the way, Shadowcat — who’d become an instructor to the All-New X-Men in the fallout of Battle of the Atom — found herself surprisingly drawn to the Guardians leader, Star-Lord. Following the event, the pair even continued a long-distance romance. Pryde got the chance to spend more time with Star-Lord when she helped rescue him from his father J’Son, and the pair ended up drawn into the conflict over the powerful artifact known as the Black Vortex.

Following that battle, Pryde actually retained some of the energies from the artifact and was proposed to by Star-Lord, setting up an engagement between the pair and Pryde’s continued time with the Guardians. As a result of his following election to the role of King for the Spartax Empire, however, Pryde found herself spending more and more time in space to be with him. She more or less replaced him as Star-Lord on the Guardians of the Galaxy, serving with the team (at the time consisting of Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Angela, Venom and Thing) while Peter Quill tried to adjust to his newfound power. A fight over the Star-Lord identity led Pryde to fully join the Guardians for months, working alongside the team and helping them confront plenty of cosmic threats.

Shadowcat Guardians of the Galaxy 2

Although her romantic life was in dire straights, Shadowcat adjusted well to her time as Star-Lord, fighting against the likes of the Kree, the Badoon, and the Collector during her time in space. Especially after Quill was dethroned and returned to the team full-time, he and Pryde tried to make their romance work — coming to terms with their mistakes and trying to overcome their arguments. But the final nail came during the events of Civil War II. After the Guardians were recruited by Captain Marvel to help her in the conflict against Iron Man, the team relocated to Earth. After arriving, Captain Marvel secretly informed Star-Lord that they’d captured Thanos — the same Mad Titan that Gamora and Drax were dedicated to finding and destroying.

Despite his misgivings, Star-Lord agreed to keep this a secret from his teammates. He informed Pryde, who argued he should tell his friends before it came out naturally — which, by the event of Civil War II, it had. This led to the brief breakup of the Guardians as a team and led Pryde to rejoin the X-Men, quietly breaking things off with Quill. When the time came for the team to reunite to fight against Thanos, she answered the call and came to help Star-Lord. But when the fight was done, she confirmed that her place was on Earth with the X-Men — ending her romance with Peter Quill and her tenure with the Guardians of the Galaxy on a quiet and bittersweet note.
