Why James Gunn Loved ‘Torturing’ Margot Robbie in The Suicide Squad

Director James Gunn reveals the hardest thing he asked Margot Robbie to do while filming The Suicide Squad and why it was his favorite day on set.

“Torturing” Margot Robbie was James Gunn’s favorite day on the set of The Suicide Squad.

In an interview with guest host Anthony Anderson on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Gunn was asked about the hardest thing he asked Robbie to do as Harley Quinn in The Suicide Squad. “The hardest thing I asked her to do was something I never thought she would be able to do,” Gunn said. “There’s a scene in which Margot is being hung up by handcuffs over her head, and she has to get her toes along a dead body and pick a key off of the dead body, flip her toes backwards to put the key into the lock over her head, unlock it and then come down straight.”

Gunn described Robbie as a “human swiss army knife” as she performed the stunt, to his surprise. “I’m watching this–it was honestly my favorite day, torturing Margot was my favorite day on set,” Gunn said. “And watching this scene with her flipping backwards was just beyond incredible, and I was so happy that it worked, and I was mesmerized by it, and then I got into the editing room with the footage and [she had] this little cuff next to [her], on [her] outfit that covers her face, so it looks like it’s a stunt person.”

Despite her face being obscured, Gunn insisted that it was Robbie performing that stunt, calling it his “biggest regret” of the film that he did not remove the piece of her costume covering her face.

Robbie first appeared as Harley Quinn in 2016’s Suicide Squad, directed by David Ayer, prior to headlining the 2020 spinoff film Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). However, the actor recently stated that after her appearance in Gunn’s follow-up film The Suicide Squad, she’s not sure when or where Harley Quinn will next appear in the DC Extended Universe. “It was kind of back-to-back filming [Birds of Prey]… and filming [The Suicide Squad], so I was kind of like, oof, I need a break from Harley because she’s exhausting,” Robbie said. “I don’t know when we’re next going to see her. I’m just as intrigued as everyone else is.”

Fans can see all of Robbie’s stunts as Harley Quinn in The Suicide Squad, which premieres in theaters and on HBO Max Aug. 6.
