Why Does Minerva McGonagall Always Wear Green?

[ad_1]

In Harry Potter, Professor McGonagall has an affinity for wearing the color green, but is there an in-universe reason why?

One thing about the Harry Potter movies is the attention to detail, especially in the art and costume department. Every feature of the richly magical world of witches and wizards is paid attention to, from the desktop objects to the costumes. One such detail that fans have noticed is Professor McGonagall’s weird fixation on the color green. Throughout the eight movies, she is almost always dressed in vibrant, emerald green — and fans are questioning why. Considering she’s the head of Gryffindor (not Slytherin), one would almost expect her to be wearing red, but that’s never the case.

Various fan theories floating around the Internet attempt to tackle this question, with ideas that range from explaining McGonagall’s heritage to a possibly magical connection.

One theory posted on Reddit by user LunarLampLight suggests that McGonagall always wears green because the tabby cat she can transfigure into has green eyes. It’s not an unsound theory. When McGonagall transforms into the cat, her entire outfit transforms with her, yet the clothes disappear when she’s in cat form. But this wouldn’t explain why she chooses to wear green clothes. If this Reddit theory were correct, the tabby’s eyes would change color depending on the color of her robes.

Another theory posted on Quora by Tiff Dawson poses the idea that green could be the main color of her tartan, which is a patterned cloth that represents different clans from Scotland. While McGonagall’s heritage is never discussed in either book or movie, it’s definitely possible that her family could be from Scotland. If her family’s clan were associated with a green tartan, it would explain the reason for her constant choice of emerald robes. Unfortunately, there is no canon way to prove that.

It’s also possible that the choice to always dress her character in green could be a more thematic decision on the part of the art department. The color green is often associated with vitality, health and luck. Professor McGonagall, though she is upwards in age, is somehow the most lively of Hogwarts’ professors. With her firm posture and strict presence, McGonagall makes herself known throughout every Harry Potter movie and even gets a fantastic moment in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 where she commands the statues of Hogwarts to defend the castle. Her green robes could possibly be a representation of her true nature.

Fan theories true or not, Professor McGonagall will always be visually remembered wearing green. At the end of the day, the choice to dress her in green made her character stand out in the movies and worked visually in every scene. She’s known for being strict and attentive, but now she’s also remembered for something more — always wearing green.
