Who Voices Tom Hanks’ Robot in Finch?

[ad_1]

Apple TV+ recently released Finch starring Tom Hanks as the titular character, but who voices his bumbling robot companion?

On Nov. 5, Apple TV+ released its newest original film, Finch. Directed by Miguel Sapochnik, this heartfelt post-apocalyptic sci-fi drama stars Tom Hanks as the titular character, Finch Weinberg, a robotics engineer. Hanks’ ailing character creates Jeff, an intelligent robot tasked with protecting Finch’s beloved dog, Goodyear, after Finch inevitably passes on.

Tom Hanks is a household name, but the voice behind Jeff is a lesser known, yet exceptionally talented actor who joined the cast in both motion capture and voice acting roles.

Dying from a terminal disease and concerned for the future of his pet thereafter, Finch builds a self-aware robot, Jeff, to perform his daily dog-sitting duties. He bestows an encyclopedia of knowledge upon Jeff, including the principles of training and caring for dogs. Throughout Finch, due to a data upload failure, Jeff has the inquisitive and clumsy nature of a child.

Finch and Jeff develop something of a father-son bond and as his condition worsens, Finch tries to teach Jeff some valuable life lessons. Despite initially causing some problems for his creator, Jeff eventually learns the importance of friendship and life itself — whether that be human or animal.

Jeff, the adorably clueless bot, is voiced by none other than Caleb Landry Jones, a musician and actor best known for his roles as Banshee in Marvel’s X-Men: First Class and Jeremy Armitage in Jordan Peele’s psychological horror, Get Out.

In 2012, Jones had his first starring role in Antiviral, the feature-film debut from writer-director Brandon Cronenberg, the son of Canadian horror director David Cronenberg. From then on, Jones continued to integrate himself into both independent and mainstream movies with supporting roles, including the aforementioned blockbusters.

This year, Jones portrayed Australian mass-murderer Martin Bryant in Justin Kurzel’s Nitram, earning him a Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actor. Furthermore, Jones was included in the ensemble cast for Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, the 2017 crime-drama movie that won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.
