Two of Marvel’s most forces, Mephisto and Galacctus’ battle once shook the entire Marvel Universe to the core — and one clearly won their duel.
The Marvel Universe is full of powerful forces, ranging from the galactic to the mystical. Each has their own strengths and weaknesses, and many of them have even come back from obvious and apparent death. But with two of the most powerful potential in the entire universe positioned to one day appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s worth considering just who’s stronger, Marvel’s premiere demonic lord or the Devourer of Worlds.
In Marvel Graphic Novel #38, “Silver Surfer: Judgement Day,” by Tom DeFalco, John Buscema and Stan Lee,” Mephisto and Galactus once came to blows — but which one proved to truly be one of Marvel’s most powerful forces?
HOW STRONG IS MEPHISTO?
Formally making his introduction in Silver Surfer #3 by Stan Lee and John Buscema, Mephisto is one of the Marvel Universe’s most devilish figures. A monstrous trickster who rules over a section of Hell, Mephisto is considered to be one of Marvel’s most powerful demonic forces. His control over magic allows him to be impossibly strong and tough compared to most other beings in the universe.
He’s effectively immortal to most physical needs, and is a master at magic and shapeshifting. Although his powers are only at their peak when in his netherworld, he’s been shown easily handling the best tactics of other immensely powerful sorcerers, like Doctor Strange or Doctor Doom — and has been a major player in recent Avengers storylines, such as “Heroes Reborn.”
HOW STRONG IS GALACTUS?
Introduced in the seminal Fantastic Four #48 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Galactus is one of Marvel’s most distinct figures. The last survivor of the reality that came before the current one, Galactus was reborn in the modern universe as a fixture of the universe. The giant being traveled the universe, absorbing the life force of various worlds to sustain himself and to continue being a part of the natural order.
Due to his connection with the Power Cosmic, Galactus is capable of surviving almost any injury and those he empowers are considered among the universe’s most powerful beings — such as the Silver Surfer. He’s easily challenged Celestials and brought down cosmic forces alone. Although he’s technically dead at the moment (at the hands of All-Father Thor), his power and history imply he may one day return.
GALACTUS VS MEPHISTO: WHO WINS?
The pair came to blows in Stan Lee and John Buscema’s “Silver Surfer: Judgement Day” from the Marvel Graphic Novel collection. Mephisto — craving the pure soul of the Silver Surfer, one of Galactus’ most rebellious and heroic former heralds — ended up capturing Nova, another herald. Surfer confronted the pair as they traveled the galaxy, with an enraged Galactus exiling both the Surfer and Nova to the remains of a world as he trekked across the galaxy with any lack of check on his appetite. Mephisto appeared to the Silver Surfer, offering him the chance to save countless lives and return to the starways in exchange for his soul.
Eventually learning of Mephisto’s machinations after he claims the soul of the Silver Surfer, Galactus and Nova teleport to Mephisto’s realm to confront him. The ensuing battle between the two forces is enough to make “the galaxies themselves bid fair to tremble and quake in agonizing disarray.” Worlds across the galaxy are shaken by the impact of their attacks. Witnessing the intense battle, Silver Surfer realizes the full extent of their powers turned against one another could be great enough to even put the entire universe at risk of destruction. He’s able to use the last of Power Cosmic to reach out to Galactus with a plan — for Galactus to feed upon Mephisto’s hellish realm itself, and force Mephisto to surrender less he lose the source of his power.
Horrified, Mephisto makes peace with the fact that Galactus is an elemental force that can never truly be either good or evil — which means the demonic Mephisto has no way of ever truly defeating him. Instead, Mephstio allows the battle to end on more or less a draw between them — and lets Galactus, Nova, and the Silver Surfer escape the hellish realm, their souls intact. It’s an interesting victory for Galactus, with the cosmic powerhouse technically able to say that it was Mephisto who caved. Although the demon wasn’t strictly defeated, his might wasn’t enough to truly beat back Galactus, and indeed Galactus came close to wiping out his entire realm mid-battle. Although Mephisto is almost impossible to defeat, it’s clear that Galactus is one of the few forces capable of outlasting him.
