Rubeus Hagrid has a unique wand in the Harry Potter series, but it perfectly suits his character.
Rubeus Hagrid was the first wizard Harry Potter met when he returned to the Wizarding World after being raised by muggles, delivering Harry’s letter to attend Hogwarts. Not only that, but Hagrid also serves as Harry’s friend and as his sort of parental figure. Like Harry, Hagrid didn’t have the easiest life and often felt like an outsider, and one of the most noticeable difference between Hagrid and other wizards is his bizarre wand — a delicate, pink umbrella.
Hagrid is a half-giant; his father was a wizard, and his mother was a giantess, but his mother left Hagrid’s father, and he then died when Hagrid was still young. Therefore, Hagrid had no one to take him in after he was expelled during his third year at Hogwarts. Hagrid was expelled after fellow student, Tom Riddle (aka Lord Voldemort) framed him for the Chamber of Secrets attacks. As a result, Hagrid’s wand was snapped into two pieces.
However, that’s not the end of magic for Hagrid. Dumbledore, at the time just the transfiguration teacher, fought to keep Hagrid on the grounds and had him trained as the groundskeeper. Hagrid kept his wand fragments and installed them into a pink umbrella so he could continue to use magic.
The delicate umbrella also matched Hagrid’s gentle personality, as he was comfortable expressing emotions and was a natural caregiver. However, Hagrid was also large and powerful with the ability to intimidate should the need arise. He was not afraid to get physical, using force or magic to dominate his opponents. Therefore, in his hands, the umbrella could be silly looking yet dangerous.
Meanwhile, some thought he should no longer use the fragments. When he helped Harry pick up his wand, Ollivander mentioned that Hagrid should not be attempting to use the wand pieces. However, audiences knew he was using them, as Hagrid used it against Dudley — turning him into a pig — after the Dursleys criticized Dumbledore. Dudley walked away with just a tail and not a total transfiguration, and it’s not clear if the reason for the spell’s failure was Hagrid’s spell casting ability or the quality of his makeshift wand. Either way, Hagrid found a way to make an umbrella absolutely terrifying.
In that way, Hagrid’s wand was the perfect representation of his characters. Both appeared friendly and approachable, but they had undeniable power and should not be crossed. Hagrid was a fan favorite because he was not only a great power, but also a kind and gentle heart. He provided warmth and friendship to those who needed it most — orphan children, outcasts, and misunderstood magical creatures. He was not the most conventional of wizards, so it followed that his wand is unconventional as well.
