When Did Spider-Man Marry an X-Men Icon – And What Happened to Them?

[ad_1]

One of Peter Parker’s greatest romances was with none other than an iconic X-Men veteran, and it might be the most tragic of them all.

The Marvel Universe has long been home to some of the most iconic comic book love stories of all time, with the endless expanse of the Multiverse bringing even more of them to life. In the case of the reality fans know best, the most famous of these is likely the decades long drama that has unfolded between Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson. For Peter’s Ultimate Marvel Universe counterpart, however, things took a far different turn when he met the X-Men’s own Kitty Pryde. In fact, if things had gone just a little bit differently, their relationship could have changed the course of comic book history as we know it.

2014’s Ultimate Spider-Man #200 brought together those closest to the Ultimate Universe’s Peter Parker in a celebration of his life just a few short years after his tragic death battling the Green Goblin. Apart from his family and friends on the ground, those who had come to know Peter through their shared superhero antics gathered to reminisce. Eventually, the conversation turned towards what things might have been like if Peter had survived his final battle. Unfortunately for Kitty Pryde, that wasn’t a thought that she could bring herself to cope with, especially when it consumed her with visions of the life she and Peter would never have together.

Kitty Pryde’s imagined future with Peter was filled with happy memories of loving moments and battles against one another’s villains in glorious fashion, much like it had been during the time they did get to share together. The two first began dating all the way back in 2005’s Ultimate Spider-Man Annual #1 by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Brooks while they were both recovering from respective breakups. Their fiery romance quickly turned into an ongoing superpowered team-up, though it, like their relationship, wouldn’t last. Things fell apart when Peter’s feelings for Mary Jane were rekindled. Despite this, and Kitty’s budding relationship with Peter’s friend Kenny McFarlane, the X-Men veteran’s feelings never waned. If anything, they only grew stronger over time, culminating in the life Kitty would imagine they could have had after Peter’s demise.

Compared to the relationships these two have had in the primary Marvel Universe, the love between these versions of Kitty Pryde and Peter Parker may have been the most endearing. The primary Peter’s relationship with Mary Jane has certainly become an indelible part of the Marvel Universe to the point that it helped reshape it entirely, yet it has long been marred by seemingly erratic turns and altered timelines. For the Katherine Pryde readers know best, love has always been a fickle thing, often leading her to make dramatic turns over the course of romances with the likes of Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord. When it came to the Ultimate Universe’s Kitty, however, there was never any question how she felt or who she wanted to be with, only a series of reasons why she couldn’t.

As devastating as the dreams left unfulfilled are, the romance they were born from still stands out as genuinely captivating. There is always hope that at some point the story of Kitty Pryde and Peter Parker could be told thanks to the infinite possibilities the Multiverse has to offer. It might not be the Spider-Man love story that fans are used to, but it is one that is just as deserving of a second chance.
