Rafe Judkins, showrunner of Amazon’s upcoming Prime Video fantasy series The Wheel of Time, breaks down footage from the most recent trailer.

Following the most recent trailer for Amazon’s upcoming Prime Video fantasy series The Wheel of Time, an audio commentary is now available featuring the showrunner breaking down the footage.

IGN presented the exclusive trailer breakdown from showrunner Rafe Judkins, whose previous work includes productions such as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the upcoming Uncharted movie. In the commentary, Judkins reveals more about the filming process and expectations for the upcoming show.

The breakdown begins with the opening footage of Rosamund Pike’s Moiraine holding the Oath Rod to swear her vows as an Aes Sedai. Judkins’s comments suggest Season 1 of the show does not borrow solely from the first of Robert Jordan’s books, The Eye of the World, but subsequent entries as well. “It’s something that people may not be expecting to see in the first season,” Judkins says, “but I think that they will like how we are using it.” He further reiterates the show’s intention of interweaving details from various books, as well as expanding upon the source material with characters such as Logain. “Logain is a really important character in the books who we wanted to bring up earlier in the show and more fully in this first season than he was in the first book,” he says.

Judkins goes on to explore the visuals in the trailer, with a particular emphasis on the use of practical effects. He comments on the scenery, particularly the mountainous regions that were shot on location, and mentions how the backdrop to the city of Fal Dara was filmed in the Canary Islands. The on-location shooting was vital, in Judkins’s view, for grounding the series and making it feel immersive. “[With] fantasy, when you drop out of it, it’s because you feel like it’s not real,” he says. “Trying to at least give that to our actors so that they could really feel like they’re in a real world was hugely important to us.”

The showrunner places a similar amount of emphasis on the reveal of the Trollocs that make up the Dark One’s army. He says he wanted the monsters to feel real and genuinely terrifying. “It was really important to me that they be a mix of practical and visual effects so that your brain can’t look at this and actually know exactly what is real and exactly what is created in the computer,” he explains.

Judkins also reassures fans of the books that several iconic details would be lifted straight from the novels. He points out the scene in the trailer in which Nynaeve tugs at her braid, a reoccurring tendency of hers in the books. He also comments on scenes in the trailer that some fans might have found to be different from Jordan’s work, such as Lan’s expression of emotion. While the books portray him as extremely stoic, Judkins says the show will explore his emotions more fully through his connection to Moiraine. Judkins touches on the unique relationship between Aes Sedai and Warder, as well. “They feel each other’s pain,” he says. “Not just physical but also the emotions that the other one is feeling.”

Judkins goes into even more detail about other aspects of the world, including channeling the One Power and Moirainne’s attire. He also hints the series will use other narrative techniques from the books, such as prologues and “out-of-POV chapters” to experience entirely new aspects of the world.

The Wheel of Time, based on the epic fantasy book series by Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, will premiere Nov. 19 on Amazon Prime Video.
