The Wheel of Time premiered strong on Prime Video, making the Amazon Original one of the streaming service’s best series launches of all time.
Prime Video’s The Wheel of Time debuted strong as the streaming service’s most-watched series premiere of 2021.
After the premiere was delayed due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the first episode of The Wheel of Time debuted on Prime Video Nov. 19 and was streamed “tens of millions of times” in its first three days, though specific numbers have not yet been released. According to Amazon Studios, The Wheel of Time is now one of Prime Video’s top five series launches of all time. On top of that, as reported by third-party TV-I, the fantasy series was the number one series on social across all releases, making it the biggest Amazon Original series on social this year.
“We are elated by the strong debut of The Wheel of Time, one of our most-watched series premieres of all time,” said the head of Amazon Studios, Jennifer Salke. “It’s a testament to everyone involved in the series — the incredible cast, led by Rosamund Pike, and our showrunner Rafe Judkins, and the entire team, who took viewers on a journey into a visually stunning world populated with diverse characters and cultures. It’s unlike any other fantasy series, and our customers all over the world are responding.”
Adapted from author Robert Jordan’s fantasy series of the same name, the first novel of the 14 book series, The Eye of the World, is currently the 14th rated book on Amazon’s Most Read Fiction chart. Co-produced by Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television, The Wheel of Time was greenlit for a second season in May 2021 long before its debut on streaming. Production for Season 2 began in July 2021 in Prague, Czech Republic, where it is currently still filming with principal photography halfway finished.
The first of Jordan’s The Wheel of Time high fantasy book series was published in 1990 and consists of fourteen novels. Following Jordan’s death in 2007, the final three books in the series were co-written by Brandon Sanderson. The Wheel of Time is set in a world where only women can wield the One Power, and follows a group of young villagers coming to terms with their powers as they are drawn into a worldwide conflict.
Executive produced and written by Rafe Judkins, The Wheel of Time stars Pike as Moiraine Damodred and Daniel Henney as her Warder, Lan. Five young villagers will join them on their journey, played by Josha Stradowski, Marcus Rutherford, Zoë Robins, Barney Harris, and Madeleine Madden.
The Wheel of Time Season 1 is currently streaming on Prime Video, with new episodes airing every Friday.
