Although there are countless questions remaining about Stranger Things 4, we now know definitively when the season takes place.
With Stranger Things 4 on the horizon, more conclusions are being drawn about when the season is set. If the Netflix series follows its pattern, then Season 4 will take place a year after the third; the first season was set in 1983, the second in 1984, and the third in 1985.
The newly released teaser, “Welcome to California,” indicates that to be the case, with Eleven narrating a letter to Mike about her move to California with the Byers family following the events of the Season 3 finale. “Today is day 185,” she begins. The easy conclusion is that the fourth season is set in 1986.
However, the new footage allows us to be even more specific. Eleven and Will walk through the halls of their high school, and the camera pans up to focus on a “Countdown to Spring Break” banner, which likely places the date somewhere between March and April.
Then, of course, there’s Will Byers and his infamous bowl cut, which might also be a clue as to the time period during which the show is taking place. Rather than leaving his hair long all over, Will has chosen to shave the sides, which was a popular reinvention of the hairstyle in the late 1980s.
As the era inches closer to the 1990s, hairstyles were more adventurous, particularly in women. In another split-second shot, Nancy Wheeler is roller skating at a roller rink, sporting a feathered hairstyle that skyrocketed in popularity transitioning from the final few years of the 1980s and into the 1990s. From what few clues the teaser provides, 1986 is the most promising estimate of when the fourth chapter will be set. However, the definitive answer is found not in this teaser but in another.
As part of its Stranger Things Day event on Saturday that brought “Welcome to California,” a map of Hawkins, Indiana, and other key Season 4 locations, and cast transformations, Netflix debuted a teaser that reveals all of the new episode titles. Within that video, following the titles, it states, “In the spring of 1986, the adventure continues…”
Besides confirming the year in which Stranger Things 4 takes place, the episode title teaser also provides audiences with a more accurate release date.
Stranger Things 4 is scheduled to be released worldwide in summer 2022.
