What We Do in the Shadows: Nandor Needs Love, Not Blood

[ad_1]

As Season 3 of FX’s What We Do in the Shadows kicks off, it’s clear the mighty vampire leader, Nandor, needs love, not blood, to feel whole in NYC.

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for What We Do in the Shadows Season 3, Episode 2, “The Cloak of Duplication,” now available on Hulu via FX.

In FX’s What We Do in the Shadows, Nandor (Kayvan Novak) has cut a tragic figure of sorts — kooky but also, a bit of a softy. It’s evidenced as Season 3 kicks off, with him not wanting his familiar, Guillermo, to be killed for murdering a slew of vampires, including the Eastern Seaboard council. But while he isn’t willing to be kind enough to turn his helper, he’s still hurting on the inside and missing something important. In “The Cloak of Duplication,” we soon discover it’s not blood he needs — it’s really love.

Nandor’s not really been into romance as much thus far, with most of that in their Staten Island coven boiling down to Laszlo and Nadja, albeit it’s more passionate, raucous sex with them than soulful sentiment. Now, there’s a chasm in Nandor’s soul, or whatever remains of it, after pillaging for centuries, conquering and bedding so many women.

It seems like Nandor never found his true soulmate and he’s now exploring that in modern New York. He indicates there’s a woman, Meg, working at the front desk as his Massive Fitness gym. He wants to woo her but lacks confidence, so he wants his peers to use the Cloak of Duplication, shape-shift into him and procure her love.

After purloining the cloak and assuming they’ll get the job done, though, it’s botched horribly. Colin Robinson belittles Meg and is thrown out of the gym, while Laszlo comes off way too toxic and misogynistic, resulting in the same fate. The soft-spoken, big-hearted Guillermo then attempts, but he leaves Meg thinking Nandor’s in love with his familiar in another show of incompetence.

Nandor finally works up the courage in lieu of the crew bungling things, but Meg admits she’s a lesbian and has zero interest whatsoever. Nandor goes home, crushed after this miserable failure, hoping to get a good night’s sleep in his coffin. However, Nadja belittles him as she think he was weak in subjugating some rebel younglings in Queens, worried that Nandor could ruin things as they’re now charged with leading the council.

But Nandor lashes out, asking Nadja if she really thinks all there is to life is “bloodlust and mindless killing.” Of course, she agrees this is all that matters, but Nandor proclaims that’s because she gets to spend her life with Laszlo so she has someone to share struggles with. As such, she’s more complete than him and can be more rugged performing leadership duties.

Obviously, Nandor is lonely and wants companionship, but not a buddy in Guillermo or vamps he’s spent centuries with plotting; his heart craves that endearing bond he thought he forgot about. As such, Nandor’s a hopeless romantic whose perspective is changing drastically as one of the undead. To him, ruling and being the dominant species may well end up being things of the past and Season 3 might see Nandor pushing forth to find the right one in a Big Apple landscape he barely understands.

Season 3 of What We Do in the Shadows is finally here. The first two episodes are streaming now on Hulu via FX.
