WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for What We Do in the Shadows Season 3, Episode 10, “The Portrait,” now available on Hulu via FX.
As Season 3 of What We Do in the Shadows wraps, it’s quite an emotional one with the Staten Island coven steeped in turmoil. They’re not handling Colin Robinson’s (Mark Proksch) death well, which leads to certain vampires wanting to leave New York to forge new paths. As the melee unfolds, the finale has a civil war that creates and then brutally destroys Guillermo’s (Harvey Guillén) ultimate dream.
Nandor recounts his multiple failures with love this season and realizes he doesn’t even care about the local Vampiric Council chapter anymore. He wants to roam the world again to find himself as Nandor the Relentless.
Guillermo tries his best to sabotage it until the Guide helps Nandor plan the journey, which culminates in an epic argument as Nandor makes it clear he’ll be finding his purpose alone. Guillermo is hurt by how neglected his master has been and finally lashes out — saying everything he’s wanted to in the show as he feels abandoned.
Guillermo berates Nandor as he is furious for not being turned into a vampire after his countless years as a familiar. He is also upset about not being invited along on the tour. Guillermo throws in Nandor’s face how he saved his master multiple times when they crossed the council, and if not for him, the coven would be dead. He also gets caustic when he tells Nandor, seeing as he’s actually a vampire hunter and a descendent of the Van Helsings, he’s shown Nandor mercy by letting him live all this time.
The insult leads to a physical scrap as both men use blades and throw each other around Nandor’s room. It ends with Guillermo holding up a crucifix and threatening to burn Nandor, only for the vamp to pull a Hail Mary. He admits this is the badass he’s wanted all along for a bodyguard, so Nandor asks Guillermo to join him. When they reach his former kingdom in Al Quolanudar, once Guillermo kneels on the soil, his master promises to convert him.
An ecstatic Guillermo packs, as he’s in love with him too so it’s the perfect getaway. Sadly, as Guillermo helps out at the port, boxing up Nadja to head to Britain for her new job, Laszlo ambushed and throws Guillermo in a box too, leaving him with Oreos, Pedialyte and a hole to pee from.
Laszlo wants Guillermo to be Nadja’s new bodyguard as he’s got new things to handle at the coven, which leaves Nandor on the New Jersey train, making the trip alone. He’s disappointed as he leaves Guillermo’s suitcase behind at the station. It’s made even more heartbreaking as Laszlo ignores Guillermo’s screams to be let out, getting packed on the ship to go England as the season ends.
All 10 episodes of What We Do in the Shadows Season 3 are streaming now on Hulu via FX.
