While Lovecraft Country didn’t get a Season 2, let’s dissect unresolved threads and showrunner, Misha Green’s vision to see what it might have been.
Fans of HBO’s Lovecraft Country harbored hope that there would be a second season. Sadly, the show wasn’t renewed. However, showrunner Misha Green laid enough seeds for a follow-up and has recently been expounding on what another season could have looked like. Let’s reconcile what she recently divulged, and the threads that went unresolved to see what may have taken place had Lovecraft Country Season 2 come to fruition.
Diana’s New Mission
After being a victim of the Sons of Adam, Diana got sweet revenge by the season’s end with her robotic arm. She snapped Christina’s neck for all the hurt the Braithwaite family caused them and Black people in general, with their racist, elitist agenda. To top it off, Tic left her in charge of the Shoggoth monster, so Season 2 could have followed her as a vigilante and true social justice warrior. Green revealed what the new America would look like after Leti stopped white people from using magic, so there’d have been more than enough territory for Diana to explore.
Green tweeted out a map that made up part of Season 2’s bible, showing the U.S. divided between the “Tribal Nations of the West,” the “Whitelands,” the “New Negro Republic” in the South, and the northeastern “Jefferson Commonwealth.” She later confirmed that the Whitelands was a zombie-infested zone, which offered ground for Diana and her pet to explore. This could have allowed a monster-of-the-week scenario a la X-Files with vampires, werewolves and such.
Hippolyta Becomes A Powerful Hero
Diana’s mom, Hippolyta, also transcended after being lopped through the Multiverse and becoming a cosmic time god of sorts. Season 2 could have had her carrying on the Freeman legacy Uncle George left behind. Seeing as she was the kind of superhero Diana always dreamt of, they could have even formed a partnership in protecting the new America. There was so much potential for Hippolyta to mentor her daughter while exploring her own powers.
There might have been outliers from the Sons of Adam or other white, occult radicals still existing. So even if she went at it alone, Hippolyta would have had enemies to feud with as they tried to unlock supernatural secrets, power and immortality. Lovecraft Country prides itself on badass Black women beating down demonic racists, after all, so Green’s America would have been perfect for her to road trip.
George Freeman and America’s New Magic
The Lovecraft Country book Tic, Leti and Co. used to help on their mission would be written by their son. Therefore, seeing young George with these heroes around him would have been a great story. Viewers could learn about his formative years as he also followed the path of Hippolyta’s husband while honoring the legacy laid down by Tic and his grandfather, Montrose.
George would have been the ideal person to document how race, politics and economics affected the country, given Tic’s sacrifice. And along with his mom, Leti, and Ji-Ah, he could have found which classes of society — whether sinister or not — tried to bring magic back. With America now having internal borders, his adventures would have surely made statements on today’s current climate, not just domestically but globally.
Hippolyta would likely help him meet his ancestors, too, laying the template down to aid Tic’s magical journey in the closed-loop. To add drama, George would also have had personal issues to deal with, such as his family’s secrets with George Sr. pegged as Tic’s real dad. All of this shapes him as a real historian as he did his part in carving a path for the Freemans, other Black people and people of color in general.
Executive produced by Jordan Peele, Yann Demange and J.J. Abrams, Lovecraft Country stars Jurnee Smollett, Jonathan Majors, Aunjanue Ellis, Abbey Lee, Jada Harris, Wunmi Mosaku and Michael Kenneth Williams, with Courtney B. Vance, Jamie Chung, Jamie Neumann, Jordan Patrick Smith and Tony Goldwyn. Season 1 is streaming on HBO Max.
