Marvel’s What If…? has introduced fans to new worlds and characters, and these inspirations would be perfect additions to the Avengers game.
Marvel’s What If…? is a series that gives fans a glimpse of the many different universes that exist outside of the main continuity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. These range from characters inhabiting the lives of others to nightmare worlds filled with monsters. These different universes and characters could be used to create a plethora of new content within Marvel’s Avengers, as well as link it to the MCU.
As a live service game, new content is vital to keeping Marvel’s Avengers fresh in players’ minds. Considering Marvel’s long history, there is a huge multiverse full of material for Crystal Dynamics to pull from, and What If…? presents some good ideas for what could come sometime in the game’s future.
Following the example of What If…? could provide a good opportunity to introduce new characters, particularly new versions or variations on those already in the game. Two of the show’s most interesting characters were Captain Carter and Star-Lord T’Challa. Captain Carter is a version of Peggy Carter who took the super-soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers. She has all the powers and abilities of Steve Rogers, but her universe is far different in other ways. T’Challa, meanwhile, has a wildly different story to the main Black Panther continuity. In What If…?, T’Challa was found by the Ravagers. Over time he became Star-Lord rather than Peter Quill.
Introducing these two characters might seem impossible within Marvel’s Avengers‘ world, but the show has an explanation that could be feasible. These variants are eventually gathered together by the Watcher to battle an Infinity Stone-powered Ultron. The game could use a similar explanation, with the Watcher placing the new characters into the game to stop some calamity in the time stream. These new characters could connect the game to MCU, or at least other parts of the Marvel universe, while also adding some variety to the heroes and campaign options.
While new characters and campaigns are great additions, there also needs to be bonuses for the current characters. Thankfully, What If…? presents plenty of new skin options, perhaps with some new dialogue attached. The game could also take things a step further by incorporating the Zombie versions of the Avengers either as skins or an entirely new mechanic. The zombie universe shows a world slowly being taken over by a zombie plague. The majority of the world and its heroes have become flesh-eating monsters, and survivors are desperately trying to find a cure.
The show does have the zombies invade another universe due to the actions of Stephen Strange, and a similar event could take place in Marvel’s Avengers‘ universe. This could take the form of a brand new game mode that pits the player against zombified versions of other heroes. The introduction of an entirely fresh new mode with new rewards would help keep players interested and bring old players back.
Keeping players interested and returning post-launch is one area where Marvel’s Avengers has struggled since launch. However, the sheer wealth of Marvel content to draw from is a major advantage the developers should not forget. The Avengers helped to cement the MCU as one of the most prolific cinematic forces in the world and has spawned many different offshoots and series. If it wants to enjoy the same kind of success and longevity, Marvel’s Avengers needs to make use of these by giving players new and intriguing ways to enjoy their favorite characters time and time again.
