What Marvel Material or Metal Can’t Hulk Break?

[ad_1]

Many powerful metals and substances exist within the Marvel Universe, but are any of them strong enough to hold the Incredible Hulk?

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Hulk #2, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Marvel’s new Hulk series (by Donny Cates, Ryan Ottley, Frank Martin and Corey Petit) offers a new and unique take on Bruce Banner and his monstrous alter ego. The Hulk persona has been trapped behind a mental barrier inside Banner’s consciousness that has thus far proven capable of containing the brute.

Throughout the decades, very few substances have been able to withstand the Hulk’s strength, posing the question of if there is really any substance in the Marvel Universe that the Jade Giant is incapable of destroying.

The Adamantium of the X-men’s Wolverine

Hulk Starship Wolverine 2

Traditionally, adamantium has been able to stand up against the brute, making the X-Men’s Wolverine one of the Green Goliath’s most formidable threats. The feral mutant initially debuted as an adversary to the monster in Incredible Hulk #181 (by Len Wein, Herb Trimpe and Jack Abel).

In their ensuing rivalry over the years, Wolverine has never been able to put the Hulk down for good, indicating that Banner’s alter ego is capable of withstanding and possibly even overcoming the adamantium that comprises Wolverine’s skeleton and claws. In the recent Hulk #2, the Green Behemoth is seen tearing a claw off of a giant-sized version of Wolverine, so it appears that at least in his mind the monster is capable of breaking the metal.

Black Panther’s Vibranium from Wakanda

Vibranium seems to have a better chance of holding back the Hulk, although that has not been definitely confirmed. When the Avengers confronted Banner in Immortal Hulk #7, Captain America’s shield didn’t stand a chance, despite being a Vibranium-Adamantium alloy. Even a blast of kinetic energy from Black Panther’s Vibranium suit wasn’t enough to stop the powerful monster.

However, in Immortal Hulk #47, T’Challa strikes back at Bruce. He easily tears off an arm of the monster with only a few minor upgrades. So although it isn’t guaranteed to work every time, with a little practice, preparation and effort, Vibranium is strong enough to cause serious damage to the Hulk, strongly hinting that the powerful metal is strong enough to effectively restrain him as well.

The Uru of Thor’s Enchanted Hammer, Mjolnir

Uru, the mystical metal comprising Thor’s hammer, has often been depicted as a weakness for the giant.  Thor has regularly bested the Hulk ever since Avengers #3 (by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and Stan Goldberg), seemingly due to the use of Mjolnir. But after The Immortal Hulk #7,  during the aforementioned clash with The Avengers, even this seems to be outdated.

Thor stood no better chance against Banner than the rest of the team, even with his Uru hammer. Terrified, Thor asserted his belief that the Hulk had surpassed his previous limitations and become a god in his own right, implying that even the Uru metal of his enchanted hammer was no longer enough to stop the raging beast. Anger, it seems, can propel the Hulk past any virtually any obstacle, considering that his strength increases with his rage…and with there being no defined limit to how great his strength can become, there is in all probability no physical substance in the Marvel Universe capable of containing a fully enraged Hulk.
