My Hero Academia’s Izuku Midoriya has the heart of a fearless hero, and his MBTI personality type confirms it.
The story of My Hero Academia focuses on Izuku Midoriya as the star, and Izuku has come a long way since his junior high school graduation. Though born Quirkless, he’s always had the brave and selfless heart of a hero, and he proved it when he rushed forth to help his childhood friend Katsuki Bakugo from a slime villain. All Might was watching the entire time.
After seeing that, All Might decided he had finally found the heir to his symbolic role in society and his Quirk, One For All. Now, All Might has hung up his cape, and it’s up to Izuku to become the world’s new #1 hero against a rising tide of villainy and crime. In the face of such odds, only one MBTI personality type will prevail and save the day in true style.
Izuku Midoriya’s MBTI Personality Type: ENFJ-T, The Protagonist
Izuku Midoriya is an ENFJ-T, or a turbulent Protagonist, according to the Myers-Briggs metrics. Incidentally, his idol All Might is also an ENFJ, except that he’s an assertive type, making him an ENFJ-A. Izuku is somewhat more turbulent than All Might as a Protagonist, since Izuku is still growing and learning both as a person and as a hero, and is making plenty of mistakes along the way. Izuku must face his own insecurities and inner demons, stabilizing his personality so he can realize his full potential as an ENFJ and truly succeed All Might as the symbol of peace.
As expected, a Protagonist is a brave, selfless and enthusiastic person who gladly takes on challenges and risks on behalf of others, and a Protagonist like Izuku gets immense satisfaction not out of their own accomplishments, but by protecting and inspiring others. An ENFJ is defined not by their pride or self-image, but by their capacity to be a symbol for others and protect justice, the law, happiness and much more. In extreme cases, a Protagonist can become a martyr, sacrificing their life or happiness to inspire and protect the masses.
Protagonists are fairly extroverted, and they have little trouble sensing the mindset and emotional state of other people, so they know who to protect with their Protagonist powers. Along the way, an ENFJ will inspire and motivate that person with their own idea of courage and strength, even if the other person isn’t totally ready yet. Protagonists must work hard to rein themselves in from time to time and keep themselves grounded. They fancy themselves to be invincible and tireless beings, but alas, no one is — not even the symbol of peace himself.
Izuku Midoriya As An ENFJ-T In My Hero Academia
Izuku has been a Protagonist from the very start of My Hero Academia, including that incident with the sludge villain who nearly killed Bakugo. Izuku’s ENFJ personality also shone brightly when he rushed to Kota Izumi’s defense, challenging the terrifying villain Muscular despite the odds. Izuku didn’t just want to win — he wanted to protect and inspire Kota as well, who had grown jaded about heroes after the deaths of his pro hero parents.
Izuku’s lofty idealism as a Protagonist helped motivate him to overcome impossible odds and perform an incredible 1,000,000% Smash to win the fight. Izuku did something similar when fighting to protect the young Eri from the wrath of Overhaul the villain, and again when he defeated Gentle Criminal to protect the happiness of the U.A. culture festival.
Izuku also works hard to bring out the best in his classmates and friends, empowering them to become their personal best and follow his example. His ENFJ nature certainly inspired Ochaco Uraraka, who sees Izuku as her own All Might, and Izuku’s Protagonist-style emotional appeal reached Shoto Todoroki’s heart during their fight in the U.A. sports festival. Izuku also gladly serves as a protective big brother to Eri alongside Mirio Togata, and Izuku would risk life and limb to protect her.
Still, despite his brilliant Protagonist personality, Izuku is still a turbulent ENFJ, and he needs to sort through his own insecurities. He struggles with doubt and fear in his career, wondering if he is truly ready for One For All and prepared to become the #1 hero in the face of such stiff competition. He even let his insecure, fearful side show itself during the civilian rescue sequence of the provisional hero license exam, although this does not detract from his overall heroism.
