What If…? director Bryan Andrews says Chadwick Boseman was excited to perform as a different version of King T’Challa in the animated series.

What If…? director Bryan Andrews shared that late Black Panther actor Chadwick Boseman was really excited to record his parts as King T’Challa for the upcoming Marvel and Disney+ anthology series.

“He was excited to play this particular version of T’Challa because it was different,” Andrews said in an interview with Deadline. “Because it was a version of him playing the King, but the King without the mantel, the royalty and everything else that goes along with it. He could lighten it up and get more jokey with it. He was excited to bring back that flavor to T’Challa.”

Andrews added he had an “amazing” experience working with Boseman on the episode, noting, “We only got a small moment because our episodes are so short. I think he was one of the first actors to sign on.”

“He wanted to read scene descriptions in between and built it out like a play,” Andrews said of Boseman’s voiceover performance. “None of us knew what he was going through at the time.” Boseman died in August 2020 after a private battle with colon cancer.

It was previously revealed that Season 1 of What If…? will consist of 10 episodes, with each episode exploring what would happen if major moments from films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe occurred differently. Episode 2 of the series will serve as an homage to both the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise and Black Panther. Specifically, the episode will find Yondu beaming up a young T’Challa in the fields of Wakanda, voiced by Boseman, in place of Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill.

Jeffrey Wright, who voices Uatu/The Watcher on What If…?, also recently shared what it was like to hear Boseman as T’Challa for the final time while watching What If…? “[I] was really moved to hear Chadwick Boseman voice T’Challa again as he does in the show,” Wright said. “I actually first met him when Black Panther was being introduced at Comic-Con. We saw each other from time to time after that and just to watch him grow as an actor and watch him take on this character, to see what that character meant, and to understand that he was doing that while facing serious challenges, I just find to be on the level of heroism that Black Panther himself is on. So to be a part of just a little bit of what some of his last work is is really special. And I can’t wait for folks to just hear him.”

In addition to featuring voice work by Boseman and Wright, What If…? will include contributions from Jaimie Alexander, Hayley Atwell, Paul Bethany, Angela Bassett, Leslie Bibb, Josh Brolin, Don Cheadle and more. What If…? makes its Disney+ premiere on Aug. 11, with subsequent episodes airing on Wednesdays.
