What If…? Just Unveiled Marvel’s Deadliest Reed Richards

[ad_1]

The world of Spider-Man: Spider’s Shadow has just introduced one of the most terrifying versions of Mister Fantastic in the entire Marvel Multiverse.

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Spider-Man: Spider’s Shadow #4 by Chip Zdarsky, Pasqual Ferry, Matt Hollingsworth and VC’s Joe Caramagna, on sale now.

The world of Spider-Man: Spider’s Shadow has seen Peter Parker transformed from Manhattan’s friendliest superhero into a murderous menace simply by never shedding his symbiote suit back when he had the chance. This retelling of one of the most iconic storylines in Marvel history hasn’t just changed its titular hero into a twisted version of himself, but now one of the greatest minds in the Marvel Universe as well.

Not only has Reed Richards just become the most important part of the Venom symbiote’s scheme, but he might even be the powerful version of him yet.

A after Peter Parker is finally freed from the Venom symbiote, Peter finds the Baxter Building covered in symbiotic ooze. Upon reaching the disturbance, Spider-Man is met with the other gathered Avengers, all of whom have been fruitless in their attempts to breach the barrier. Peter knows that the symbiote has been waiting for him, and as he approaches the building an entrance appears before him. Before the opening can close behind him, Peter is joined by both Johnny Storm and Mary Jane. Inside the building, they find a rampaging Ben Grimm and a horrifying symbiote-possessed Mister Fantastic. Now standing taller than ever on horrifically distorted limbs and protected by a high-tech suit of armor, this new Reed is all too happy to show his guests what he has been working on.

Reed Richards’ incredible intellect at its disposal, the Venom symbiote has started genetically engineering its own offspring in mass quantities. Besides having already bent the Thing to its will, the symbiote is poised to do the same to each and every other person it can reach with its new brood. Considering how quickly the symbiote implemented its plans, this might just be the most vicious version of Reed to date.

Considering Reed Richards’ pedigree in the Marvel Universe, that might not sound like too shocking of a statement, although recent events throughout the Multiverse would beg to differ. As explained by Eddie Brock in the pages of Venom #35, the Reed Richards of the Ultimate Universe has become not just a threat to his world, but to all realities. When the Ultimate Reed emerged as the Maker in 2011’s Ultimates #1 by Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic, it came after a series of personal failures that began with the Ultimatum Wave and culminating in Sue Storm rejecting his marriage proposal. Unable to cope with the way his life was spiraling out of control, Reed soon went mad. In the years since, he has been responsible for some of the most atrocious acts in Marvel history, including what appears to be an upcoming invasion of the primary Marvel Universe.

There might not be any telling precisely what the Maker is up to, but it is hard to imagine there could be any plan of his that could one-up the current trajectory that the Reed of Spider’s Shadow is on. The symbiote-infested Mister Fantastic isn’t any threat to the Multiverse at large yet. But with the way things have stacked up for the Venom of Spider’s Shadow, it may just be a matter of time before he spreads his symbiote tendrils into the Multiverse.
