What If…? is an animated series that explores the Multiverse. With a total of 9 episodes, each episode depicts what would happen if a single key event in the MCU changed, with the exception of the conclusion. While it is an engaging series, not every episode is strong, especially since they all tell completely different stories.
Many of the stories are open-ended as well, not receiving a proper conclusion. This affects the quality of some of the episodes. Despite having only a few episodes, the series does succeed in showing just how vast the Multiverse is, giving future MCU content much more to explore.
9 What If… Ultron Won?: Ultron Had Little Substance
Ultron isn’t one of the MCU’s most interesting villains, and this episode does little to change that. His role was the same and only expanded when he discovered new places to destroy. His ability to kill Thanos so easily didn’t make much sense, considering Thanos had most of the Infinity Stones. Additionally, his fight against the Avengers was skipped entirely. Perhaps this story would have been better executed if Ultron’s victory wasn’t condensed into a single episode, setting up the final confrontation that would be resolved in the very next episode.
8 What If…Thor Were An Only Child?: It Doesn’t Really Affect The Rest Of The Series Much
This episode focuses on Thor partying on Earth and developing a deep love for Las Vegas. Thor is no longer bloodthirsty, and he has a much better relationship with Loki. He chooses to spend his free time goofing off, but not very much is done with his character.
He doesn’t do anything in the episode that warrants attention from The Watcher, making it unclear why he would choose Thor as a hero rather than anyone else in the countless number of multiverses.
7 What If… The World Lost Its Mightiest Heroes?: The Story Involved An Interesting Mystery
This episode is a brutal one, as countless iconic heroes are killed before they even have a chance to become a part of the Avengers. It involved a mystery that many fans didn’t see coming. The deaths seemed to have nothing in common at first, but when the villain was exposed, all the pieces seamlessly fell into place. The episode showed just what someone in one of Hank Pym’s suits could accomplish.
6 What If… The Watcher Broke His Oath?: The Episode’s Quality Was Affected By The Episode Preceding It
The final episode brought back heroes who were seen in previous episodes, as well as Gamora, who should have received her own episode. One episode was not enough to make the final battle satisfying, as Ultron had been built up to be so powerful that he was able to destroy entire planets in the blink of an eye. It also left many questions unanswered, although they will hopefully be addressed in a second season.
5 What If… Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead Of His Hands?: It’s A Tragic Love Story With A Well-Developed Romance
Episode 4 focuses on Doctor Strange’s tragic obsession with saving the woman he loves. However, no matter how many times he turned back time, he couldn’t save her, forcing him to watch the tragedy again and again, which only fueled his determination. The characters treated the event as an absolute point in time, which made little sense since another version of him lost his hands and was so devastated that he pushed his world’s Christine away. Fans can’t help but root for What If…?‘s version of Strange even when he makes all the wrong decisions, showing just how well the episode portrays his love and devotion for her.
4 What If… Captain Carter Were The First Avenger?: It’s A Simple Yet Satisfying Premise
Captain Carter’s story was the best suited for starting the series. It is one of the more light-hearted episodes and focuses on the first Avenger. The episode doesn’t overwhelm the fans with too many changes, as everyone’s personalities are still the same, and Captain Carter still falls in love with Steve Rogers. It does do a good job of portraying the obstacles she faces as a female super soldier and even puts Steve in the first Iron Man suit.
3 What If… Killmonger Rescued Tony Stark?: Killmonger Re-establishes Himself As A Cunning Villain
Killmonger is a fan-favorite villain due to his cunning and his ruthlessness. His intelligence shines in this episode, as he saves Tony Stark from an explosion in Afghanistan. This, combined with outing Obadiah Stane, immediately earns him Tony’s unconditional trust.
He uses Tony to gain the power to invade Wakanda and earns himself a position of power in both America and Wakanda. All of this takes incredible planning, which he executes perfectly. Unfortunately, the final episode of the series makes it less than likely this story will have a satisfying conclusion. Unless Doctor Strange releases Killmonger, Pepper Potts will never be able to confront the man responsible for killing Tony.
2 What If… Zombies?!: Marvel Puts An Interesting Twist On Zombies
Zombies are introduced in a unique way, and the episode shows exactly what would happen if superheroes are infected. Zombies with powers make it all too easy for the infection to get out of hand and make them much more terrifying. The episode doesn’t have a happy ending, but most horror films don’t either, making it a good fit for this episode. The only problem that fans have with the episode is that Thanos appears in Wakanda, despite the fact that Vision is nowhere near the area. Looking past that, however, it is a frightening reveal to see a Zombie Thanos with most of the Infinity Stones.
1 What If… T’Challa Became A Star-Lord?: T’Challa Is A Very Likable Star-Lord
Many fans consider the second episode of the series to be the best one. It’s a simple story, exploring what would have happened if T’Challa was taken in by Yondu Udonta instead. Unlike Peter, he reforms the Ravagers, helps countless planets, and even talks Thanos out of his destructive plans. It is a fun, lighthearted episode, and perfect for fans who love the Guardians Of The Galaxy films.
