What Happened When Wonder Woman Gave EVERYONE Superpowers in JLA

[ad_1]

In the classic JLA series from the 90s, Wonder Woman once had so much faith in humanity that she gifted the world with superpowers.

The Amazonian Justice League member Wonder Woman recently helped usher in the Infinite Frontier by sharing the memories of the multiverse with everyone, restoring what was lost to the DCU. But there was a time when she decided to give everyone on Earth superpowers. An impending apocalypse forced her hand as she trusted that everyone would use their collective abilities for the good of the world. It’s become a classic move for Wonder Woman to trust in the inherent good of humanity to help save the day when the task at hand is too great for any single hero to overcome by themselves.

In JLA #36 by Grant Morrison and Howard Porter, an ancient superweapon known as Mageddon, a war machine that was used during the fall of the Old Gods, resurfaced. Escaping from its prison, the villain made a beeline for Earth, intending to destroy it. The Justice League attempted to stop Mageddon but were overpowered, forcing the heroes to come up with another solution before the Earth was wiped from existence.

With all else failing, Wonder Woman decided to take drastic action. Knowing that the combined efforts of all of Earth’s current heroes would not be enough, she decided to empower all of Earth’s people instead. She led them into space in a coordinated attack on Mageddon, damaging it enough for Superman to permanently disable the weapon and prevent it from threatening the universe ever again.

It was a bold decision, but one that is completely in line with the character of Wonder Woman. She has always been a champion of the truth, and she sees humanity in a way that is much different from most other heroes. She sees the inherent flaws in people, but she also believes in the inherent goodness of mankind. So she took a risk, giving everyone on Earth the means to feel like Superman for a moment in order to save the world. She trusted that there was enough good in the world for the people of Earth to save themselves when the Justice League couldn’t.

This level of trust has rarely failed Wonder Woman. She helped restore the collective memory of the multiverse, undoing the lost history of the DCU by trusting everyone in existence with the truth of their history. Likewise, in the film Wonder Woman 1984, she asked the world give up their greatest wishes in order to save themselves. In that scenario she trusted in humanity’s willingness to sacrifice in order to save one another.

Wonder Woman is arguably one of the few heroes in the world who trusts humanity at such an extreme level. Batman would never have that kind of faith in people and Superman would never be willing to ask that of them. But Wonder Woman has enough belief in the goodness of people to give them the chance to be heroes.
