Westworld actor Thandiwe Newton says she was prepared to retire from acting for good before signing on to the hit HBO sci-fi series.

Westworld actor Thandiwe Newton admitted she was ready to retire from acting before signing on to the hit HBO science fiction series.

“Honestly, I was ready to quit,” Newton told Inverse in a recent interview. “Happily, joyfully, like, ‘Oh, I don’t have to keep acting? Fine.'”

Newton added that she has a lot of other things going on inter life that fulfill her, explaining, “I love being a mother. I love being a human rights activist. I love writing. This was my moment to step away, and not in a fearful way. It just fit. And then I got the call for Westworld.”

While the actor still had reservations after reading the script, it was ultimately her husband who helped convince her to take the gig. She further explained, “It was my husband, [Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again director Ol Parker,] who said, ‘Oh, this sounds good,’ because of the team involved.”

Newton has starred as Maeve Millay in all three seasons of Westworld but admitted in the same interview that she thinks Season 1 was their best work yet. “The first season was the real epiphany,” Newton said. “After that, I feel like we’re in an entertaining show, honestly. And that’s not to discredit the show. I love the show. I think it’s wonderful. But it’s all about the origin story, isn’t it really? The origin story of Westworld is profound and had a massive impact.”

In addition to her role in Westworld, Newton made headlines last spring for correcting the spelling of her own name. In April, the actor said she will be credited as “Thandiwe” not “Thandie.” She said at the time that “Thandie” was a nickname she acquired based on the actual name she was given at birth, Melanie Thandiwe Newton.

It was previously revealed that Newton and her co-stars will be joined in the upcoming fourth season by Prodigal Son star Aurora Perrineau, who will appear in an undisclosed role for at least five episodes. Production on Season 4 is currently underway after a short delay due to a positive COVID-19 test on set.

Westworld stars Evan Rachel Wood, Thandiwe Newton, Ed Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Tessa Thompson, Luke Hemsworth, Simon Quarterman and Rodrigo Santoro, Aaron Paul, Vincent Cassel, Lena Waithe, Scott Mescudi, Marshawn Lynch, John Gallagher Jr., Michael Ealy and Tommy Flanagan. Seasons 1-3 are available to stream on HBO Max. A release date for Season 4 has yet to be announced.
