We had the pleasure of chatting with the creator of Otherworlds Tabletop RPG!
Tell us about your Kickstarter
Sure thing!
My next Kickstarter is for the Otherworlds Tabletop RPG.
Otherworlds has been to the Kickstarter rodeo a few times before, BUT this is the first time people can get a physical copy of our core rulebook!
Otherworlds is unique in that the rules are streamlined, making it familiar and easy to pick up. The game also has a lot of meat to dive into, especially for character creation, where it shines with a plethora of options! Thanks to its unique Skill Tree system, which allows you to mix and match “skill branches’ ‘ to form your own Skill Tree, and make the class you want to play, fitting your character’s story and gameplay. Say goodbye to standard classes, there’s thousands of combinations for your Skill Tree alone!
Combine this with some dynamic action, where attacking and damage is rolled into one die roll, and players can roll to defend and evade for themselves, making it so players are engaged and constantly participating in the story instead of getting on their phones, waiting for their turn to come up.
Otherworlds is a 2d6 game, with the exploding dice mechanic, so whenever a 6 is rolled, players continue rolling. Each six is considered a critical and can be spent to perform Combat Maneuvers, such as disarming, extra attacks, evading, counter attacking, etc. but also players have control over choosing to create their own Combat Maneuvers out of their criticals as well!
What has been your biggest success as a creator?
It’s hard to pick just one thing, so forgive me as I cheat a bit here. 😛
First, it’s simply being happy making games and having the chance to make others happy in the process. As creative types, we can be really hard on ourselves. We can stress ourselves out too much, and wear our hearts on our sleeves. It’s easy to get our head focused in the wrong places and grow depressed from the world news, and the ugliness we’ve encountered, so being able to find a place where I can actively create games and be a part of an uplifting community, I consider a huge success.
Piggybacking from that, this year, I’ve now surpassed my day job’s income with my companies, which is a great feeling! However, there’s currently no plans for me to quit my day job – it’s just nice to have it on the table as an option, but I also enjoy putting our proceeds into making new games and expanding the Vindiverse (Vindicated Universe).
Goals for 2023?
Vindicated is looking to release the Otherworlds Core Rulebook in a physical capacity this year, in addition to a physical version of our TTRPG game Legendaria from 2019.
We’re also planning to do a new physical book of our rules light, spooky and whimsical TTRPG, Black Paper Moon called the “Black Paper Moon: Soul Punk Edition,” that incorporates some new rules, Legends, and art!
Last but not least, I’m working on building out the idea of the Vindiverse, fostering a space for our original characters and stories that will tie into a lot of what we do, especially on the card game and board game side.
People familiar with our anime dating sim turned board game, Heartseeker, may notice it features a wide variety of characters and that’s because we took them directly from our other games that came before it!
We plan to do the same with our upcoming Truck-kun card game in 2024, as well as various pieces of art and media that helps establish this universe for people to be excited about and get to know these characters through adding another level of depth to our games, not really seen commonly in the space.
Tell us about being a game designer.
I was raised playing games of all types and I’ve always loved writing and drawing, so game design feels like it’s always felt second nature to me.
While creating games and the ideas behind them comes naturally, the tough part is also being a publisher, handling all the backend business side of things, which we’ve been learning and growing accustomed to, but by no means is that easy.
I do think it’s a great position to be in though, because we get to work on our terms, our way, and connect our game universes and community together to foster a really special place for people to be a part of when they play Vindicated.
