We had the pleasure of interviewing E.C. Myers all about his work!

Hello E C Myers I hope you’re having a good day.

So to start When did you realize writing is my passion and I want to make it into a career?

I’ve wanted to publish a book since I was a kid, but at the time I didn’t know it could be a career. I had never met an author before and there was no easy way to communicate with the writers of my favorite books beyond writing them letters, I guess, so in a sense I had no concept that authors were just ordinary people (usually with other jobs and careers) or what the “writing life” was like. Writing was just something I enjoyed and did well; I got good grades in English class and on my exam essays, but it only seemed like a useful skill to have. I was planning to become a doctor! It wasn’t until college that I realized there are creative careers (and that I would be a terrible doctor) and began to figure out how I could make that happen. I really wanted to write for TV and films, but it was easier to start out by writing and submitting short stories to science fiction and fantasy magazines. Once I settled on that goal, shortly after graduating from college, I stayed focused on it and improving my craft, and I never stopped.

When you began Writing for RWBY did you watch the show beforehand or was it all written straight through without watching the show?

I binge watched as much of the series as I could before I even auditioned for the job. I had to write a sample scene or story and come up with some ideas for the book, and I needed to a) know that I liked the show enough to want to write books related to it, and b) familiarize myself with it so I could write about the characters and world authentically. When I knew I would be writing the books, I finished catching up on the show, and I often went back to re-watch certain episodes and moments while writing. I’ve lost track of the number of times I’ve seen the “Caffeine” fight scene from “Breach”! I suppose it’s helpful that most of the characters I’ve built books around haven’t had a lot of screen time yet.

What were some of your favorite things to write for After The Fall, Before the Dawn, Roman Holiday and RWBY Fairy Tails?

After the Fall: The flashbacks to Beacon, and any scene with Fox in it. Before the Dawn: Velvet’s chapters and Professor Theodore and any scene with Fox in it. Roman Holiday: Neo’s internal dialogue and Roman being Roman. Fairy Tales: “The Grimm Child”—and the screenplay for the combined Faunus stories.

What where the more challenging things to write for RWBY After The Fall, Before the Dawn, Roman Holiday and RWBY Fairy Tails?

After the Fall: Fox’s POV chapters, because I wanted to represent his blindness as respectfully and accurately as possible. Also anything that was very connected to established canon, because I didn’t want to contradict anything. Before the Dawn: There were just too many POVs to juggle! Roman Holiday: Neo was challenging to write for, because she is such a visual character—how do you convey that in prose? Also, for all three novels, I have to work a little harder on the action scenes, again, because they are just so visual and amazing to watch on the show. Fairy Tales: The most challenging thing was making each story sound and feel completely different, especially on a tight deadline.

What is your favorite thing that fans do based on your books?

Art inspired by the characters and books! To mention one creator in particular, I love AliAvian’s CFVY comics and animations, some of which are adapted straight from the novels. And the cosplayers! It was amazing to see MonicaoftheLion cosplay as Carmine Esclados.

Do you have a favorite book from all 4 you’ve written so far, if so which ones?

I’ll say Roman Holiday, because it was so much fun to write Roman and Neo, and it turned out pretty much the way I hoped it would.
