Watch: ‘The Northman’ Trailer Has Alexander Skarsgård Seeking Revenge

[ad_1]

Alexander Skarsgård cuts a bloody path through his enemies as a hulking Viking on a quest for revenge in trailer for Robert Eggers’ The Northman.

In the trailer for The Northman, Alexander Skarsgård cuts a gory and savage figure as a Viking on a mission for vengeance. The Northman is being billed as an epic revenge thriller from The Witch and The Lighthouse filmmaker Robert Eggers, and the first clip certainly comes up to that promise, teasing all the mud, blood, sweat, and tears you’d expect from a Viking tale told with Eggers’ unique perspective.

The Northman appears to be bringing the same evocative, gloomy, atmospheric, and frequently horrifying qualities to the table that Eggers has shown a penchant for in films like The Witch and The Lighthouse. In fact, with the filmmaker describing it as “by far the hardest thing I’ve ever done and by far the most ambitious,” this epic narrative is set to travel even further down the psychologically thrilling rabbit hole.

The Northman is a film about a Viking named Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård) who watches his father, King Aurvandil, being murdered by his uncle, Fjolnir, at the turn of the tenth century in Iceland. Amleth departs his own realm after his mother, Queen Gudrun, is taken, but not before vowing vengeance on those who have mistreated him. Robert Eggers directs the film, which he co-wrote with Icelandic poet and novelist Sjón.

The Northman features an all-star cast that includes the likes of Nicole Kidman as Queen Gudrun, Ethan Hawke as King Horvendill, Willem Dafoe as Heimir the Fool, Björk as the Slav Witch, and Claes Bang as Fjölnir alongside Alexander Skarsgård. The Northman also sees director Robert Eggers reunite with The Witch star Anya Taylor-Joyn. The Northman is scheduled to be released on April 22, 2022, by Focus Features.
