While Moon Knight has finished and Doctor Strange is in theaters, Marvel is kicking up the hype machine for their next Disney+ series, Ms. Marvel. With it exactly one month until the series premieres in June, Marvel decided to drop a new teaser trailer which features Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan talking about how getting something she always wanted doesn’t work out as well as she had hoped while her mother, played by Zenobia Shroff, is trying to help her and show her that she’s not alone.
Kamala originally appeared in an issue of Captain Marvel in 2013 before headlining her own comic series the following year, the first Muslim character in Marvel Comics history to do so. In the source material, Kamala is affected by the Terrigen Bomb, which unleashes a mist that unlocks the latent abilities hidden inside people who carry Inhuman DNA. Kamala receives the ability to alter her size, increase her mass, and shapeshift into other people and inanimate objects. Recent trailers, like this latest one above, show Kamala using a different power set than her growing and shape-shifting powers from the comics.
Kevin Feige recently sat down with Empire and admitted that the MCU version of Ms. Marvel has very different powers than the original comic book version, explaining that due to the timing of the her insertion into the MCU, her powers as well as her origin had to be changed. .
“We adapt the comics; it’s not an exact translation. [Kamala] came about in a very specific time within the comic-book continuity. She is now coming into a very specific time within the MCU continuity. And those two things didn’t match. What we will learn about where those powers come from, and how they come about, is specific to the MCU. You will see great comic splash panels in some of our action sequences. If you want big, giant hands and arms, well they’re here in spirit, if not in stretchy, plastic-type ways.”
The series focuses on a teenage girl who loves superheroes, science and writing fan-fiction, who comes across a bracelet that gives her cosmic powers and all the troubles that come with it. Bisha K. Ali is the head writer and executive producer, while the directors involved include Adil El Arbi, Bilall Fallah, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Meera Menon.
