Was New Avengers Cancelled Cause it Was “Too Gay” or Too Dumb?

[ad_1]

According to reports, a former Marvel showrunner claimed in a series of now-deleted tweets that his TV show was canceled by an executive because it was deemed “too gay.” Kevin Biegel, a writer who was supposed to work on New Warriors, a proposed Freeform show starring Squirrel Girl, Mister Immortal, Night Thrasher, Speedball, Microbe, and Debrii, tweeted about the show we never got to see. And he isn’t pleased about it.

Freeform dropped the show after the pilot allegedly received some positive responses from viewers, claiming that they didn’t have room in their schedule for New Warriors. But there was another reason, according to Biegel, the series’ showrunner, why the show never made it to air.

Worth noting: Biegel DID delete these tweets

Biegel also shared some behind-the-scenes images from the show, showing Milana Vayntrub as Squirrel Girl, as well as photos of the ensemble cast and some lines from the script, including one where a character describes herself as “Black. Queer. Powered.”

While Biegel claimed the show was shut down by an executive (some suggested Jeph Loeb) because it was “too gay,” CBR reports that “a Marvel spokesperson denied these claims, telling CBR the company was fully supportive of the show and that after Freeform and other distributors passed, the project did not move forward.”

New Warriors was originally produced by Marvel Television and was developed for Freeform and had a straight-to-series order in 2017. In November 2017 The Hollywood Reporter noted the show would not be airing on Freeform, and that it was being shopped around. By 2019, it was reported by GWW that the show was “officially dead.”

ClownfishTV weighed in with their takes.

What do you make of Beigel’s claim? Are you bothered about no Squirrel Girl show? And if you’re looking for a gay New Warriors, Marvel’s gotchu…
