Unlike Mario games, which are more focused on adventure, WarioWare has always been a collection of absurd microgames that challenge your hand-eye coordination. It’s all about quick reflexes—blink, and you lose. If you enjoy this kind of premise and are okay with simple graphics, then you should give WarioWare: Get It Together! a try.

As we just mentioned, WarioWare is based on microgames. The objective of a game could be to avoid an enemy, sort an obstacle, move something as quickly as you can, or just answer a question before the time runs out. Oh, by the way, you only have a few seconds to do that, so you better think fast and adapt to all characters’ moveset.

Although there is a Story mode, it’s just an excuse to guide you through WarioWare’s madness; don’t come expecting a narrative-heavy adventure! And in case you’re wondering, there is an online mode so you can compete against other players. More info in the Gameplay section!

WarioWare: Get It Together is not a game that shines because of its graphics. In fact, it’s an eclectic mess that only makes sense in the context of the microgaming genre (titles like Bishi Bashi, for example) and Japanese graphic design. Some levels are based on Nintendo games, both old and new, some use 3D images that clash with the rest of the art style, and there are even some levels that use hand-drawn backgrounds and items. Still, everything feels natural for a game like this. After all, it’s a Wario game…

Honestly, we love the upbeat soundtrack, but it’s hard to enjoy the music when you must concentrate on solving a puzzle in less than 10 seconds. Regardless, it’s nice to hear little tracks that complement the stage’s and game’s theme, like when you play a Nintendo-inspired microgame. All that being said, such brilliant use of sound effects and voice cues actually helps you understand what to do and rarely distracts you from your task, so we must say WarioWare: Get It Together totally gets how to use music and SFX in their favor.

As soon as you start the game, we recommend you complete the Story mode. It will only take you a couple of hours, but that’s what you need to do if you want to unlock all microgames, game modes, and extras. Also, that’s the only way to unlock all characters, so don’t stop playing until you’re done with it. Basically, Wario and his friends/coworkers designed a video game, but some bugs are rendering it unplayable. Now, Wario must literally enter the game to save it, while also freeing his friends in the process!

Every stage will force you to play a series of microgames before reaching a final boss. If you lose your 4 lives, it’s game over…unless you spend 100 coins to continue. If you beat a boss, you earn 1000 coins and get access to a new area. Also, all stages are tied to a specific character that will be locked to your crew, and they can join your team once you finish the stage.

There are over 120 microgames in WarioWare: Get It Together!, and all of them are very different from each other. Sometimes you need to solve a simple puzzle, like matching an image to an item or answering a question, and some others you just need to move an object to the right position. Sometimes there are enemies and obstacles in your way, but most of the time, it’s just you against the clock. Truth be told, all games are stupidly easy to win once you know what to do. Still, there are times when you can’t even understand why you lost or what you had to do to win. Ultimately, the difficulty comes from adapting to each character’s moveset. You always move with the left stick and use A to perform an action, but not all characters can move freely around the map.

Speaking about the characters, beating the Story mode will unlock customization options. You can change a character’s color palette by giving them gifts (you can buy Prezzies with coins) and leveling them up. There are several missions tied to the microgames and characters, which is a fun way to earn even more coins while picking characters you wouldn’t normally use. Still, the best thing about WarioWare: Get It Together is the inclusion of an online ladder with weekly challenges. That’s the perfect excuse to always come back to the game even after mastering all microgames!

WarioWare: Get It Together is not for everyone, as some people may find it boringly repetitive, too easy, or even too expensive for what it has to offer. In our opinion, it’s a very good game for those who enjoy this obscure genre, and perfect for casual gamers who enjoy local co-op.
