Norman Reedus, star of The Walking Dead and Death Stranding, may be trying to build hype for his potential casting as the MCU’s Ghost Rider.
Norman Reedus, star of The Walking Dead, is fueling rumors that he has been cast as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Ghost Rider.
Following a report from reputable industry insider Charles Murphy, Reedus has taken to his social media to add further fuel to the casting rumors. According to Murphy’s now-deleted tweet, Marvel has finalized a deal with an actor to play Ghost Rider in the MCU. He goes on to say that he’s happy with the choice but doesn’t reveal who will adopt the mantle of the Spirit of Vengeance. Fans began speculating when, just after the original post was made, Reedus began liking fan tweets all speculating on his potential role, leading some to believe that he’s building hype ahead of a major announcement.
This follows reports that Marvel Studios has settled on which iteration of Ghost Rider will join its cinematic universe, but Murphy was hesitant to reveal which Spirit of Vengeance will make the cut. Marvel has yet to confirm when fans of the Spirit of Vengeance can expect to see the leather-bound entity rev his way into the MCU, but this report is just the most recent in a string of recent rumors regarding an upcoming adaptation.
According to Murphy, Marvel Studios has settled on which Ghost Rider will eventually powerslide into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While it’s currently unknown whether Johnny Blaze, Danny Ketch, Robbie Reyes, Alejandra Jones or Kushala will join the likes of Spider-Man and Doctor Strange. Only Johnny and Robbie have been represented in live-action adaptions; for a time, it was widely believed that Gabriel Luna’s Robbie Reyes was canon in the MCU due to his appearances in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
As for Johnny Blaze, the resurrected daredevil was played by Nicholas Cage in two feature films: Ghost Rider in 2007 and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance in 2012. Mark Steven Johnson recently spoke to Cage’s portrayal of the character, explaining, “Nic was always the choice for Ghost Rider. He has such a love for this character. There was never talk of anyone else playing Johnny Blaze.” Cage is reportedly a devoted comic book enthusiast and has previously expressed his adoration for the medium.
Despite many fans are hoping Reedus will be the actor to play Ghost Rider in the MCU, others are hopeful that Gabriel Luna will reprise his role. While this may seem unlikely, Vincent D’Onofrio recently returned as Kingpin in Hawkeye, having previously played the role in Netflix’s Daredevil.
