The heavy-handed foreshadowing in “Hunted” seems to point to a brutal death for Alden.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Walking Dead Season 11, Episode 3, “Hunted,” which aired Sunday on AMC.
The latest episode of The Walking Dead didn’t disappoint, but by the end of the hour, one character looked pretty much doomed –Alden. When the Reapers attacked in the final moments of “Acheron Part 2,” Maggie’s group was already in shambles. They were tired, hungry and all of their ammunition was depleted from fighting off the walkers in the subway tunnel. So, they were not prepared to fight.
Their deficiencies — combined with the Reapers’ training and coordination — made for a bloodbath, and “Hunted” went on to show the extent of the attack. Roy and Cole are killed almost immediately while Duncan is mortally wounded and dies later in the episode. Gabriel and Negan are also wounded, and Daryll and Elijah are captured. From the looks of it, Maggie, Alden and Agatha are the only ones that get out unscathed. However, that doesn’t last long.
After the initial ambush, Maggie is all alone and fleeing the scene of the attack. She is almost hit with a flying knife, so she goes inside an old mall and runs into Alden. They are only together for seconds before two of the Reapers attack again. Maggie defends herself and is then saved by Negan, but Alden is not so lucky. Before Maggie and Negan can rescue him, he sustains two deep cuts in the stomach. Maggie and Negan help him along, but walking is a chore with the extent of his wounds.
As they leave the mall, they find Agatha and a dying Duncan. Once Duncan is gone, they try to move on but are soon cornered in the woods by a herd of walkers, and that’s where Agatha dies. Maggie, Negan and Alden get away from that, but Alden is doing much worse. So, they decide to take a break and rest in an old church, but it’s not just a break for Alden. He tries to convince them to leave him there and carry on the mission to get the supplies they were looking for. He calls himself a “dead man walking,” and is determined to sacrifice himself to give them a chance.
Maggie reluctantly agrees and makes plans to come back for him, but the situation doesn’t look good for Alden. Fans on reddit are convinced that Alden is doomed because of the heavy-handed foreshadowing in the episode. Outside of the church sits a cross, one they have shown three different times. The cinematography has been highly praised this season, so that doesn’t really feel like a coincidence. Additionally, before they got to the church, the camera focused on a charred walker tied to a tree, with a “Judas” sign over its head. Alden betrayed Negan and switched sides, so the implication is that the Reapers will find him and string him up on that cross.
Its sounds brutal, but it would be on par for the course. The Walking Dead has a history of killing its most likeable people off in the most brutal ways – Herschel, Glenn and Noah just to name a few. There is a high probability that Alden is about to follow in their footsteps.
To find out Alden’s fate, tune into Season 11 of The Walking Dead. The series airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on AMC and is available to stream early on AMC+.
