In Venom #1, Eddie Brock pushes his new King in Black powers to the limit, giving him a glimpse into his dark future in the Marvel Universe.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Venom #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
Eddie Brock has never had what anyone could call a simple life, but it has been more complicated than ever since he took on the role of the new King in Black. As the new god of all symbiotes, Eddie is connected to his powers in ways he never could have imagined before. He has even been pushing them past the limits of what his predecessor could do and using the Hive as a means to peer through both space and time. Unfortunately, there are some particularly unsettling side effects that come with doing so, the most pressing of which is the fact that Eddie has now seen his own dark future, and there is nothing he can do to prevent it.
Eddie Brock is no stranger to adventure, but traversing the cosmos alongside a team of symbiotes is not what he is used to. Still, these are the kinds of duties that have fallen into his lap now that he has taken over as the god of the symbiotes. When a distress call is picked up in the far reaches of space, the symbiotes nearby hear it, and almost as soon as they’ve passed it along one of them becomes host to the King. Through the Hive, Eddie is nearly omnipresent, able to see through the eyes of the rest of the Hive.
Venom #1 (by Al Ewing, Ram V, Bryan Hitch, Andrew Currie, Alex Sinclair, and VC’s Clayton Cowles) reveals that there are some symbiotes who are not as willing to give themselves over to the new King. While Eddie is busy dealing with the Skrull pirates who caused the distress call, one of the symbiotes slipped away only for Eddie to later discover that they have slaughtered the ship’s crew. Something is different about this symbiote, and it leaves Eddie with a warning to tell his loved ones to run and hide before what is coming for him arrives. The experience leaves him understandably shaken, but there is still something Eddie can do about it, assuming his powers really can do everything he imagines.
The symbiote Hive is more than just a way for Eddie Brock to commune with or inhabit the other symbiotes that are connected to it. Through the Hive, Eddie can also see for himself the experiences and memories of any being that has left a Codex behind after bonding to a symbiote. It is because of this that Eddie has theorized he could use his connection to the Hive to traverse time or even other dimensions.
Eddie puts his focus into looking into another time, and in an instant he is pulled free from reality and through a whirlwind of terrifying visions. As he tumbles wildly, Eddie passes by glimpses of menacing helicopters, a massive and brutish force calling itself Bedlam, and even Kang the Conqueror. The moment doesn’t last long before he snaps back to the present in his own body, yet even the brief flashes of the future that Eddie caught were enough for him to know just how dire the situation is for him and his son.
It shouldn’t come as any surprise that the future looks grim for the new King in Black, although the plethora of threats he is destined to face are still somewhat overwhelming. The fact that they all seem to be centered around Eddie’s son doesn’t make the situation any better, although Dylan has proven himself to be a capable hero in his own thus far.
Even though this is his first time accessing his new abilities, perhaps Eddie will find a way to put them to even better use, and find a way to save both him and his son from the terrifying future that has just been revealed.
