Spider-Man and Venom’s Free Comic Book Day Special reveals that a bleak future may be in store for the new King in Black, Eddie Brock.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Free Comic Book Day: Spider-Man/Venom #1, available now from Marvel.
Eddie Brock’s life has taken some shocking turns ever since he defeated Knull and became the new King in Black, the god of Marvel’s symbiotes. From his throne at the center of the symbiote Hive, Eddie has kept a near omnipresent watch over every corner of the universe, waiting for the next great threat to arise. All the while, his son Dylan has bonded to Eddie’s former symbiote to create a new Venom. ANd now, Marvel has offered a glimpse at the dark futures of both heroes. Eddie might be the King in Black, but his reign over the living darkness is now looking to be incredibly short-lived.
Ram V, Al Ewing, Bryan Hitch, Andrew Currie, Alex Sinclair and VC’s Clayton Cowles’ “Like Father, Like Son” opens on a destroyed hotel where armed forces are hunting down Dylan’s Venom. Since bonding to Dylan, Venom has done all it can to keep the young hero safe, and now it is telling him to run. All that Dylan wants to do is stay and fight, but the symbiote reminds him that nothing can be done to bring his father back. As far as the symbiote is concerned, Eddie Brock is gone. Unfortunately, his host refuses to listen, and his grief has put them both in a dangerous position. While it’s not clear what led Venom to where he is now, the story seems to indicate that there was never just one thing aiming to end Eddie’s life.
As the story continues, the veil is pulled back on what is to come for Eddie Brock, and none of it looks good. Apart from the Avengers villain Kang the Conqueror being locked in bladed combat with Eddie, there are visions of Anastasia Kravinoff, daughter of Kraven the Hunter, wearing an Anti-Venom suit while tearing her way through one of Eddie’s black symbiotes.
Big Mother, the red symbiote born of Knull’s own blood makes an appearance, as well as two new imposing figures adorned with green armor and black horns respectively. To top it all off, an unnamed man is seen burning alive, and from the context provided it is likely to be someone who Eddie knows. All of these scenes are connected by the ominous warning to “Talk to the people you love, Eddie Brock. Tell them to run. Tell them to hide. Your son. Your other. It won’t make a difference. There is no escape for any of you.”
While many of these upcoming threats are still unknown, there’s no doubt that these battles will be just as challenging for Eddie as his battles against Knull were. No matter how much he might believe in his own abilities, it looks like Eddie’s benevolent reign might be reaching its end soon.
Assuming this all plays out as it has been foretold here, there may even be a brand new figure ascending to Eddie’s throne, which would carry with it grave consequences for the symbiote Hive assuming the next King in Black is less kind than their predecessor. Still, Eddie is no longer tethered to a physical body, nor is he necessarily confined to his own present. With any luck, Eddie will be putting his new powers to good use to quell these threats before they can turn his life into a living hell.
